LIVE ON EARTH (NL+E)

In 2002 werden we aangenaam verrast door Star One, het nieuwe project van Arjen Lucassen, maar met de dubbelaar plus bonus-cd Live On Earth doet de Nederlandse 'master of progmetal' het nog eens dunnetjes over. Het album werd najaar 2002 opgenomen tijdens de Star One-toer. De bijna twee uur durende concertregistratie staat er prima op. Natuurlijk niet zo vet en vol als op de studioversie, maar dat is vanzefsprekend. Tijdens de productie zijn enkele technische onvolkomenheden en kleine schoonheidsfoutjes weggewerkt, terwijl men tijdens de mix goed gebruik maakte van de mogelijkheid om de balans - die overigens in Rijssen voortreffelijk was - nog iets te perfectioneren. Zo ronkt de bas van Peter Vink wat aangenamer en is de zang vrijwel woordelijk te verstaan. Wie de show heeft gezien of het verslag heeft gelezen, weet wat je op Live On Earth kunt aantreffen. Van het album Space Metal zijn dat de tracks Set Your Controls, High Moon, Songs Of The Ocean, Intergalactic Space Crusaders, The Eye Of Ra en Starchild. Verder maakt de band een reis door de tijd met de albums van Ayreon. Daarbij zijn Actual Fantasy, Valley Of The Queens en Isis And Osiris smaakvolle rustpunten te midden van het steviger werk. Nogmaals is te horen wat een dijk van een stem Sir Russell Allen (Symphony X) heeft, hoe magistraal Damian Wilson (Threshold) kan zingen en ook hoe de achtergrondzangeressen Floor Jansen (Afier Forever) en haar zus Irene Jansen schitteren. Daarnaast komt met name de stem van Robert Soeteboek op de cd beter tot zijn recht. Het is onnodig te vermelden dat drummer Ed Warby en toetsenist Joost van den Broek de sterren van de hemel spelen. En Arjen Lucassen zelf? Luister en kijk! Hij heeft zelf net zoveel genoten als het talrijke publiek. Deze uitgave met dvd - het complete concert plus extra's - is een juweel en een uniek livedocument van een groep gedreven en zelf ook volop genietende musici. Het gehele concert werd met slechts enkele camera's gefilmd met een alleszins acceptabele geluids- en beeldkwaliteit, ondanks de beperkte faciliteiten. De bijsturingen van het geluid bij het begin van de nummers en de soms wat schelle belichting kunnen de overmaat aan pret niet drukken!

In 2002 we already had a pleasant surprise with Arjen Lucassen's project Star One and now the Dutch master of prog metal does it again with the live double album Live On Earth. The special edition features an extra bonus-DVD of approximately 150 minutes. The nearly two-hour show from the short tour in the autumn of 2003 has been recorded just fine, but obviously the sound is not as huge and big as on the studio recording. With the production process of this live registration some minor irregularities and one or two little technical failures were corrected and in the final mix Lucassen has managed even to optimise the balance in all vocals and instruments that were already of a superb quality during the concert in the Dutch village of Rijssen. The bass guitar of Peter Vink has a more exquisite and profound sound and nearly every word sung by the vocalists can be heard clearly. Who has seen the show or read the concert review might know what songs are on the album. From the album Space Metal you'll hear Set Your Controls, High Moon, Songs Of The Ocean, Intergalactic Space Crusaders, The Eye Of Ra and Starchild. Furthermore we travel through time with tracks from various albums by Ayreon, whilst Actual Fantasy, Valley Of The Queens and Isis And Osiris - with beautiful flute playing by Ewa Albering - are the points of rest and moments of reflection between all the heavier stuff. Yet again Sir Russell Allen (Symphony X) demonstrates his mighty and powerful voice. You can appreciate the impressive vocal abilities of Damian Wilson and the album gives also proof of how the background vocalists Floor Jansen (After Forever) and her sister Irene Jansen provided us with a superb performance. Especially the sound of the voice of Robert Soeterboek profited from the production and mixing techniques. Unnecessary to mention that Ed Warby (drums) and above all Joost van den Broek (Sun Caged) - listen to the duel between him and Arjen Lucassen in Amazing Flight In Space played magnificently in this all star environment. And Mr Space Metal himself? Just listen and watch! I'll bet he enjoyed himself just as much as the audience did, who watched him play some dazzling guitar solos and saw him radiate just like a true star. The special edition with the DVD, the complete concert recordings and some extras, is a gem and deserves a special nomination in any magazine and as a combination the CD/DVD is a unique live document from highly motivated musicians, giving their best performances and truly having a good time themselves as well. The whole concert was filmed with just a few camera's and in spite of these technical limitations the quality is surprisingly good. Although now and then some flashy spotlights strike your eyes, but this is just a minor detail. Sometimes you might hear some adjusting in the output levels of the sound, but you can correct this irregularity by making some adjustments to your hifi-system as shown on Lucassen's website. In conclusion one can say there's really much to enjoy listening to Star One's music and watching this DVD!
