THE CLASSICAL CONSPIRACY (NL+E)

Op 14 juni 2008 ging een hartenwens van Epica in vervulling: een concert opnemen met koor en orkest. Plaats van handeling: Miskolc, Hongarije, met medewerking van het koor van het Miskolc Nationaal Theater en het voor deze gelegenheid uitgebreide Remenyi Ede Kamerorkest. Het is waarschijnlijk het laatste concert dat is opgenomen met gitarist-componist Ad Sluijter, die de band inmiddels heeft verlaten. De geluidskwaliteit op de dubbel-cd The Classical Conspiracy is zonder meer uitstekend, de sfeer dolenthousiast en de productie wederom tot in de puntjes verzorgd door het vertrouwde team Sascha Paeth, Olaf Reitmeier en Miro. De eerste cd is voornamelijk klassiekgetint met bewerkingen van muziek van grootheden als Verdi, Händel, Dvorak, Prokoviev, Grieg, Pergolesh en Vivaldi. Daarnaast vind je bewerkingen van bekende filmmuziek van John Williams (Imperial March uit Star Wars), Daniel Elfman (Medley uit Spiderman) en Klaus Badelt (Medley – Pirates Of The Carribean). Verder nog enkele eigen stukken onder meer The Last Crucade, Sensorium en Feint. In het eerste gedeelte hoor je voornamelijk het orkest met bijdragen van de band en een incidenteel optreden van Simone Simons. Zij komt pas in het tweede deel volop aan bod. De bewerkingen van genoemde stukken zijn wat mij betreft bijzonder smaakvol en doen recht aan de componisten; een heerlijke symbiose tussen een klassiek orkest en een metalband. Zo mogelijk nog interessanter is de tweede cd die een uitgelezen selectie uit eigen werk bevat, waarin de zang van Simons haar collega Floor Jansen soms benadert en dat bedoel ik als compliment! Het koor past perfect in dit bombastische geheel, zoals in Living A Lie. Gitarist Mark Jansen kan zich aardig uitleven in de tweede toegift Consign To Oblivion.

Epica heeft met dit unieke concert van zo’n 140 minuten een geweldige prestatie neergezet. The Classical Conspiracy is voor alle liefhebbers van klassiekgetinte female fronted metal een uitstekende aanvulling op hun collectie! De speciale editie is verrijkt met acht foto’s van de band(leden) in actie.

Epica is a gothic rock band from the Netherlands, founded by guitarist-composer Mark Jansen (ex-After Forever). The first albums were released through Transmission Records, now they have a contract with Nuclear Blast. So far all albums have been produced by the team of Sascha Paeth, Miro and Olaf Reitmeier at the Gate Studio in Wolfsburg (Germany). In order to make their music sound bombastic and somewhat classical, there was a choir and an orchestra on their last studio album The Divine Conspiracy. Now Epica takes this and other pieces of their music to the next level, performing live with an orchestra and a choir. The Classical Conspiracy is a double album and a sort of ‘best of’. Both CDs contain a combination of a number of well-known classical themes and some themes of renowned movies such as Spiderman, Star Wars and Pirates of The Caribbean. The arrangements on the classical pieces by Verdi, Händel, Dvorak, Prokoviev, Grieg, Pergolesh and Vivaldi are very tasteful. They feature the orchestra, but the band plays along quite nicely resulting in a more powerful sound and a more modern rhythmic foundation by Ariën van Weesenbeek and Yves Huts. Probably this will also be the last official live performance with guitarist Ad Sluijter who left the band recently. The concert took place in the Hungarian town of Miskolc on June 14th 2008. In conjunction with the extended Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Miskolc National Theatre Choir, Epica added another chapter to its already colourful history. It must have been a very memorable evening, considering the enthusiasm of both band and the audience. Singer Simone Simons did well that night and at times she comes close to the vibrant performance and powerful vocal of her colleague Floor Jansen (ex-After Forever). Epica has always been more classically orientated than for example After Forever, Within Temptation or Lunatica. Their interest in bombastic movie scores shows in this night’s performance.

Any fan of classically orientated female fronted metal should check this double album out, you won’t be disappointed. Performing live is what music's all about and Epica proves that their music is truly best performed with both an orchestra and a choir. Well done indeed!
