TEMPTING THE MUSE (NL+E)

Tempting The Muse van Mysteria is verpakt in een mooi digipack in dezelfde stijl als van ‘stalgenoot’ Lesiëm. Het album is niet alleen qua artwork vergelijkbaar, maar ook muzikaal. Het betreft sensuele elektronische muziek verdeeld over elf stukken met zo hier en daar de van Lesiëm en Era bekende, gewijde Gregorische zang. Zwoele ritmes, al dan niet gecomputeriseerde zangstemmen, simpele maar aardige melodietjes en tal van grappige effecten zijn te horen op dit schijfje met een tijdsduur van een krappe 55 minuten. De vlekkeloze productie was in handen van Phobos en de composities zijn van de hand van ene Mark Adams Allison. Meer wordt er niet vermeldt, noch op het hoesje, noch op de website van het label. Hoewel er ontegenzeggelijk invloeden van Enigma te herkennen zijn, vind ik deze cd toch meer een lounge-versie van Era. Er zijn, zo te horen, geen gastrollen voor drums, gitaar of bas en de zangstemmen zijn meestal enigszins vervormd of voorzien van nagalm. Omdat de composities bepaald niet gecompliceerd zijn en elke vorm van originaliteit missen, scoort Tempting The Muse weliswaar een ruime voldoende, maar ook niet meer dan dat. Je zou het prettige achtergrond- of wegdroommuziek kunnen noemen.

The album Tempting The Muse by Mysteria is a beautiful digipack in the same style as fellow-label artist Lesiëm, not only as far as the artwork is concerned, but also comparable in genre. Sensual electronic music (EM) divided in eleven tracks with every now and then devoted Gregorian chants, well-known from artists like Lesiëm and Era. Smooth rhythms, sometimes computerized voices and simple, but really nice melodies with lots of funny effects can be heard on this disc, just short of 55 minutes length. The impeccable production was done by Phobos, the compositions are from one Mark Adams Allison, but neither the cover nor the website of the label give more information. Although there are unmistakably influences of Enigma, I tend to see this album more like a lounge version of Era. No guest musicians on drums, guitar or bass from what I’ve heard and the singing voices are mostly a bit distorted or resonant. The compositions lack any kind of originality and they are not that complicated. This Cd scores well above satisfactory, but that’s about it. Tempting The Muse contains nice background music or music to dream on.
