SPINDRAGONS (NL+E)

Binar is het samenwerkingsverband tussen Paul Nagle en Andy Pickford en dat zijn niet de minste namen op het gebied van elektronische muziek (EM)! Spindragons is hun meest recente werk wat het totaal aantal albums op zeven brengt. Dit album bevat elf tracks met een totale speelduur van ruim 79 minuten. De langste track duurt ruim elf minuten. Het gehele arsenaal van melodieuze EM vind je terug op Spindragons: vette sequencers, vreemde effecten en passages, ruimtelijke orkestraties, diverse soorten toetsenklanken, stukken met en zonder ritme. Het allerbelangrijkste is echter de mooie muziek met prachtige melodielijnen die niet direct in het hokje ‘retro’ of ‘melodieus’ kan worden gestopt. Dit is dus een uitdaging voor hen die niet bekend zijn met het werk van Binar, Nagle of Pickford. Het album opent met wat onderaards gerommel, stemmetjes en echo’s waarna de eerste ritmische geluiden volgen dat door een basloopje wordt ondersteund. Het nummer wordt opgebouwd met later zelfs een stevige basdreun op de achtergrond. De overige tracks zijn een uitnemende smeltkroes van Tangerine Dream, Robert Schroeder en meer van dergelijke EM-grootheden, maar de muziek klinkt soms ook wat statiger en orkestraler. Spindragons kun je mijns inziens zonder meer enkele keren achter elkaar afspelen zonder dat je verveeld raakt. Kortom: een bijzonder aardig muzikaal spinsel en zeker geen draak!

Binar is the cooperative pseudonym for Paul Nagel and Andy Pickford, two respected names in the electronic music (EM) scene. Spindragons is their latest album and makes it their seventh joint product to date. Spindragons contains eleven tracks with a total running time of over 79 minutes, the longest track lasts over eleven minutes. You will find the entire arsenal of melodic EM represented here: heavy sequences, strange effects and passages, spacey orchestrations, various keyboard sounds, pieces with and without rhythms and, the most important of all, a lot of great music with wonderful tunes that simply cannot be directly dumped in the box marked ‘retro’ or ‘melodic’; a challenging record, especially for those unfamiliar with the work of Binar, Nagle or Pickford. The album opens with subterranean rumblings accompanied by distant voices and echoes, then the first traces of rhythm are added which is then joined by a bass-riff. The track builds up steadily with a big bass-drone running behind it. The other numbers are a melting-pot of Tangerine Dream, Robert Schroeder and so on but often more stately and orchestrated. For me, you can play Spindragons a couple of times in a row without having the idea that you’re getting bored. In short, no rubbish here - but an excellent creation from these two masters. By the way, neither the Bogus Focus-site nor that of Binar have any information about where this limited digipack edition - only 300 copies - is available, or even if it actually exists!
