RED TREE (NL+E)

Shane Lankford, zanger, tekstschrijver en mede-oprichter van Orphan Project, heeft voor het project Fall Of Echoes de samenwerking gezocht met gitarist, componist en producer Rob Perez. Samen met de in eigen gebied gelouterde sologitarist en drumcomponist Rick Mals en de eveneens uit Orphan Project afkomstige bassist Bill Yost presenteert dit viertal op Red Tree twaalf songs in een stijl die ik zou omschrijven als intelligente, melodieuze hardrock. Hier en daar zijn wat progressieve trekjes in de muziek verweven, maar ook tal van rustige stukken zoals het gedragen Behind My Closed Eyes, dat wat aan een ingetogen Spock’s Beard doet denken, of de gospeltrack She Fits Well. De teksten getuigen vaak van een sterk religieuze overtuiging die Shane Lankford uitdraagt met zijn zuivere, diepe stem die soms wat lijkt op die van Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe). Verder hoor ik invloeden van Streets, de band rond Mike Slamer, Billie Greer en Steve Walsh, de twee laatsten van Kansas. Wie verantwoordelijk is voor de spaarzame toetsen - onder meer orgel in While I’m Alive - wordt niet vermeld in de informatie. Vooral de rustiger stukken, waaronder Little Girl Lost, spreken me zeer aan. De wat rauwere nummers zijn weliswaar melodieus, maar blijven toch wat minder hangen. Red Tree is een eigenzinnig album dat de moeite waard is om te ontdekken, hoewel Orphan Project mij persoonlijk meer aanspreekt.

Shane Lankford is vocalist, lyricist en co-founder of the band Orphan Project. He searched for a suitable companion for the project Fall Of Echoes and found him to be guitarist, composer and producer Rob Perez. Together with Rick Mals, in his area a renowned lead guitarist and drum-composer, and bassist Bill Yost, also from the Orphan Project. This four-piece came up with Red Tree, an album with twelve songs in a style I would define as intelligent melodic hard rock. In some places the music shows some progressive influences as well and there are many nice pieces with an tranquil atmosphere, such as a solemn tune called Behind My Closed Eyes, reminding me of a quiet song by Spock's Beard. Also easy listening is the gospel-track She Fits Well. The lyrics are proof of the strong Christian faith that Lankford proclaims with his deep emotional voice, sometimes sounding a bit similar to Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe). Furthermore one could recognize influences of Streets, the band with Mike Slamer, Billie Greer and Steve Walsh, the latter two from Kansas. The provided info doesn’t mention who is playing the keyboards that pop up occasionally, amomgst others the organ While I'm Alive. Especially the more quiet pieces like Little Girl Lost are quite appealing to me, a bit more than the more powerful rough parts, which are less catchy in my opinion. An album with a will of its own and worth discovering, although I must admit that Orphan Project is my favourite of the two.
