PSYCHOGEIST (NL+E)

Deze vijf heren uit Hongarije heette eerst Nemesis, maar omdat de Engelse taal toch wat meer perspectief biedt dan het Hongaars, vond een aantal wijzigingen plaats en krijgt de nieuwe frontman Zoltan Kiss Engelse les van de Australiër Peter Linka. De belangrijkste componist van het huidige Age Of Nemesis is gitarist Zoltan Fabian die is beïnvloed door gitaristen als Joe Satriani, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple), Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) en Frank Gambale. Daarnaast speelt ook medeoprichter en toetsenist György Nagy een belangrijke rol. Deze toetsenist, die ook een indrukwekkend verleden in de sportwereld heeft, is beïnvloed door Jean Michel Jarre en Kraftwerk, maar ook Depeche Mode en later Jon Lord, Keith Emerson en Kevin Moore hebben hem muzikaal gevormd. Psychogeist is het tweede Engelstalige album dat elf nummers bevat waarvan twee instrumentaal. Het is een conceptalbum over een familie die in twee kampen uiteenvalt uiteraard met de nodige misère. De muzikale stijl varieert nogal: van vrij stevige, melodieuze metal tot ontroerend mooie symfonische rock in bijvoorbeeld een slepende track als Mommy’s Crying. Ook de subtiele pianostukjes in Breaking Away zijn goed gedaan. Er wordt uitstekend gemusiceerd en met name het ritmetandem Laslo Nagy en Gabor Krecsmarik doen het subliem, waarbij het niet alledaagse basgeluid van Krecsmarik een pré is. Ook zanger Kiss doet het meer dan redelijk met zijn vrij heldere, vaste zangstem. Het val me moeilijk om vergelijkingen te noemen, maar sommige passages hebben wel wat weg van de vroege Shadow Gallery, het instrumentale stuk Goddess Nemesis vertoont wat Dixie Dregs-invloeden, terwijl de steviger stukken hun basis ontlenen aan de vroege Dream Theater met namen in Eye Of The Snake, Karma en Abraxas. Het slotstuk is een keyboard gedomineerd juweeltje. Psychogeist bevat een goed uur vrij heftige kost, maar het album is zeker de moeite van het beluisteren waard, juist omdat Age Of Nemesis toch weer net even anders is!

Age Of Nemesis consists of five guys from Hungary formerly known as Nemesis. They released several albums from 1997 onwards, but with vocals in Hungarian. Probably because founders Zoltan Fabian (guitars) and Györgi Nagy (keyboards) realized that vocals in English would give the band a better chance to gain popularity throughout Europe and maybe even throughout the rest of the world, they decided to ask Zoltan Kiss as vocalist. Eventually the line-up evolved into the present one with Laslo Nagy (drums) and Gabor Krecsmarik (bass). With the help of Peter Linka from Australia, the lyrics were translated and here we are, finding ourselves with the new album Psychogeist. As one realizes that Fabian has got his influences from guitar heroes like Joe Satriani, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Kansas, Deep Purple), Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Frank Gambale, we know the sound of Age Of Nemesis will be fairly heavy. On the other hand Nagy, who happens to be involved in sports a lot, stated to be influenced by Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode, later also by virtuosos like Keith Emerson, Jon Lord and Kevin Moore (Dream Theater). This second album in the English language varies from rather heavy, melodic metal to deeply touching, symphonic music like in Mommy's Crying. Subtle pieces by piano as in Breaking Away are also really exquisite. The lyrics are about a family falling apart. Father and son are separated and when the mother finally finds her son, her ex-husband has just passed away. The craftsmanship of all musicians is superb and especially the rhythm section (Nagy and Krecsmarik) are in outstanding form. I do like the sometimes extraordinary sound of Krecsmarik’s bass. Vocalist Kiss has a clear and steady voice and does also quite well. His English is surprisingly good! If I was asked to refer to other artists, I would name perhaps early Shadow Gallery. In the instrumental track Goddess Nemesis there are maybe some influences of Dixie Dregs and definitely early Dream Theater can be heard in the more heavy pieces like Eye Of The Snake, Karma and Abraxas. The final track is a beautiful keyboard dominated gem. Psychogeist contains a full hour of fairly heavy music. Its is certainly worth a try since this album has got this original and slightly different atmosphere!
