NAKED (NL+E)

Feel-X is de mysterieuze artiestennaam van de Amerikaanse fotograaf annex muzikant die verantwoordelijk is voor een portie intrigerende muziek. Op Naked, het derde album van Rebro staan twaalf stukken, waarop tal van stijlen binnen het elektronisch genre als ambient, experimenteel, industrial en trance elkaar vinden in een merkwaardige harmonie. Zowel de cd-inlay als de website geven erg weinig informatie over Feel-X of het instrumentarium dat hij gebruikt. Wel staat vermeld dat Fernando Tobon de bas- en gitaarpartijen voor zijn rekening neemt. De donkere sfeer overheerst in de muziek die wat doet denken aan die van David Sylvian. Dat is met name goed te horen in Mantra, het eerste stuk na de wat klassiekgetinte orkestrale opening gevolgd door een stukje trance in Kama Raga. Geluidseffecten op een zwoel ritme en een zware synth die de melodie maakt in Santi wordt gevolgd door de bijna drum ’n’ bass-achtige track Vertex met een zweverig ambient einde. Sylvian’s geest waard opnieuw rond in Passadhi, een mooi melancholiek stukje. In vrijwel dezelfde dromerige sfeer zijn het titelstuk, Alone, Schema en Omissions Of The Omens opgenomen, zij het dat in die laatste track wat meer bas en effecten worden gebruikt. In de tiende track gaat het roer opeens om. Na een subtiel begin volgt plotseling een verhoudingsgewijs rauw stukje techno, een stijlbreuk die mijns inziens de gevoelige sfeer te veel afkapt. Datzelfde geldt voor de computerstem die over kerkkoren heen een tekst opdreunt in Nibbana. De laatste trackThere Is Love In Silence bevat vrijwel alleen 'silence' en stelt dus niets voor. Conclusie: Naked bevat een half uur zeer genietbare, donkere muziek die beslist intrigeert, maar het album wordt tijdens de laatste tien minuten onderuit gehaald. Het artwork is weliswaar origineel, maar naar mijn smaak wat over de top.

Feel-X is the mysterious pseudonym of the American photographer and musician who is responsible for this collection of intriguing music. Naked, the third album by Rebro contains twelve tracks in various styles of electronic music (EM) like ambient, experimental, industrial and trance that still manage to find a remarkable harmony with each other. Both inlay and Internet site provide useful information about Feel-X and the instruments he uses. The liner notes do reveal that Fernando Tobon is responsible for the bass and guitar parts. The predominantly dark atmosphere reminds me of the music of David Sylvian. This is most noticeable in Mantra, a piece that opens with a classical orchestral flavour, followed by a bit of trance entitled Kama Raga. Sound effects, a sultry rhythm and the heavy synth which provides the melody in Santi, are followed by the almost drum 'n' bass-like track Vertex, which ends dreamily though. In Passadhi, a beautiful melancholic piece, Sylvian's shadow puts in an appearance as well. A similar dreamy mood is conveyed by the title track Alone, Schema and Omissions Of The Omens, the latter, however, features some more bass and effects. In the tenth track the boat is pushed out into comparatively rough techno waters, breaking the sensual atmosphere somewhat in my opinion. The same applies to the computer voice reeling off its words over a church choir in Nibbana. The last track There's Love In Silence contains virtually just 'silence' and therefore amounts to nothing much. To sum it all up: Naked contains half an hour of very enjoyable dark music which is definitely intriguing, but the album is let down by the final ten minutes. The artwork is truly original, but to my taste somewhat ‘over the top’.
