GAMES (1979), heruitgave (NL+E)

Games is het vierde album van Larry Fast alias Synergy. Het is opnieuw geremasterd en voorzien van de bonustrack Delta Four die mijns inziens weinig toevoegt. Ook de kwaliteit is niet significant beter dan de, zeker voor die tijd, prima uitgaven van Passport Records. Bovendien is het artwork nogal sober. De opnieuw uitgebrachte albums zijn echter wel interessant voor hen die nooit aan de aanschaf van cd's van Synergy zijn toegekomen of hem pas recentelijk hebben ontdekt. Het originele album duurde een krappe veertig minuten en was onderverdeeld in negen stukken. Logischerwijs is de eerste Delta Two een uptempo nummer met bescheiden percussie en de voor Synergy zo karakteristieke synth-geluiden, die echter wel steeds dezelfde klankkleur hebben. Ook het mijns inziens mooiste melodietje dat Synergy ooit heeft geschreven, maakt deel uit van dit nummer. Het daaropvolgende Delta Four bestaat uit een orkestrale achtergrond, waaroverheen een synth met een vioolachtig geluid met subtiele snelle loopjes is te horen, afgewisseld met een krachtig snerpend geluid. Het wat neurotische eerste stuk gaat over in rustige orkestrale klanktapijten. De derde track heet Delta One en is een stuk toegankelijker. Een discoachtig dreuntje met de bekende snelle begeleiding van de linkerhand die constant door hamert met een octaaf verschil. De rechter zorgt voor orkestraties en melodietjes, deels vervormde strijkersgeluiden, deels heldere fluittonen. Al met al een vrij klassiek getint stuk. Dan volgt Delta Three dat is onderverdeeld in A t/m F, waarbij met name C erg klassiek georiënteerd is en D een andere, bewerkte versie is van Delta Four. De overige stukken hebben dezelfde sfeer als op het album Electronic Realizations en bevatten kundig spel, veel variatie en dynamiek.

Games is the fourth album of Larry Fast under the moniker of Synergy. It is remastered and contains the short bonus track Delta Four (1978), which, in my humble opinion, doesn't add much to the whole. The overall quality is not significantly superior to the editions of the Passport-label, which were really excellent at the time. The artwork is rather plain. However, these albums are interesting for people who never bought any CD by Synergy and for the ones who only recently got acquainted with Larry Fast's work. The original album only lasted about 40 minutes and was divided into nine parts. It kind of makes sense that the first part should be Delta Two, an up-tempo track with some unpretentious percussion and those typical synth sounds, that are Synergy's trademark characterized by the same tones. In this track we also find, as far as I'm concerned, the most beautiful melody ever composed by Larry Fast. The subsequent Delta Four has some violin-like synth sound playing its fast subtle loops, alternated with some really shrill sounds over an orchestral background. The first part, which is somewhat neurotic, blends into some peaceful orchestral sound weavings. The third track is called Delta One and is again a lot more accessible. It's a disco-like drone with the typical fast left hand accompaniment constantly thumping away, an octave off the main theme. The right hand produces orchestrations and melodies, delivered through partly distorted strings sounds, partly crystal clear flute tones - all in all it has quite a classical slant to it. Next is Delta Three subdivided into parts A to F; part C is very classically oriented and part D is a new, modified rendering of Delta Four. The other parts share the same atmosphere as the one present on the the album Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra, filled with skilful playing, lots of variation and dynamics.
