ELECTRONIC REALIZATIONS FOR ROCK ORCHESTRA (1975), heruitgave (NL+E)

Beginjaren zeventig waren er enkele pioniers op het gebied van de elektronische muziek (EM). Naast de zweverige, kosmische stijl waren er ook muzikanten die een andere weg insloegen. De meesten van hen bleken het nodige aan klavieronderricht te hebben genoten en zij speelden bij voorkeur tweehandig. Denk hierbij aan Rick Wakeman (Strawbs, Yes), Keith Emerson (The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Vangelis en Larry Fast alias Synergy. Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra, het debuutalbum van Synergy, is opnieuw uitgebracht en voorzien van de bonustrack Classical Gas dat in een nauwelijks gewijzigde versie op het album Sequencer staat. Hoewel Synergy bij Nektar, maar vooral bij Peter Gabriel en tegenwoordig in de Tony Levin Band laat horen, dat hij wel degelijk vingervlugge solo’s kan spelen, staat op dit album eem melodieus en orkestraal geluid centraal, waarbij de ARP-synthesizer en MiniMoog een hoofdrol vervullen. Geen ritmebox, drums of gitaren, alleen maar keyboards! Veel stukken doen klassiek aan en zijn soms dreigend als bij een spannend filmfragment, maar soms zijn het ook gewoon luchtige, bijna populaire deuntjes. Een gedeelte uit het nummer Synergy had van een Nektar-album afkomstig kunnen zijn; het heeft een opvallend abrupt einde. Dat Larry Fast ook met sequencers overweg kan is vooral te horen in Relay Breakdown. Zeker gezien het originele karakter en het baanbrekende werk op het gebied van modernisering en verbetering van de synthesizer, verdient Synergy een plaats in de EM-eregalerij! Pikant detail is dat het nummer Classical Gas in het cd-boekje abusievelijk als derde track staat genoemd, terwijl het op de achterzijde van de cd correct als tweede staat vermeld. Het artwork is sober en voegt niets toe.

In the early seventies several pioneers in the field of electronic music (EM) emerged. Besides those adhering to the ‘esoteric’ school, there were certain musicians who preferred a different direction. Most of them had taken more than a few piano lessons and preferred to play with both hands. People like Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson and Vangelis come to mind, but also Larry Fast also known as Synergy. Larry’s first effort Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra has recently been reissued with the bonus track Classical Gas that also appeared in a pretty much similar version on Sequencer, which has been a hit in a somewhat different version, as I seem to recall. Although Larry has proven that he’s more than able to produce some really flashy leads during his stint with Nektar and especially with Peter Gabriel and nowadays with the Tony Levin Band, this album’s main ingredients are melodious and orchestral sounds, in which the ARP and MiniMoog synthesizers play the main part. No rhythm machines, drums or guitars whatsoever - just keyboards. Many of these pieces sound like classical music, some of them having rather menacing overtones, like the score to a thrilling movie sequence, others however are more cheery-sounding affairs, almost like popular tunes. One section Synergy could have been a track of an album by Nektar, though it ends rather abruptly. Larry’s skills with sequencers are predominantly shown on Relay Breakdown. In particular because of the originality of his output and his groundbreaking efforts in evolving and improving the synthesizer as an instrument, Larry deserves a place in the EM hall of fame. It should be noticed that the CD booklet erroneously notes Classical Gas as being the third track, while the inlay card correctly lists it as track two. The artwork is rather plain and doesn’t add anything.
