CATS & DOGS (NL+E)

Talisman is geen onbekende band in het AOR- en melodische metalgenre. De band rond de bandleden van Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force bestaat uit Marcel Jacob (bas), Jeff Scott Soto (zang), Fredrik Akesson (gitaar) en Jamie Borger (drums). De laatste twee zijn beiden ook al actief op diverse oudere albums van Talisman. Na het wat tegenvallende album Truth (1998) is Talisman nu terug met Cats And Dogs. Deze nieuwe cd is zeker geen onverdienstelijk album, maar het bevat geen muzikale verrassingen. De zang is prima en de bas en de gitaar worden onnavolgbaar snel bespeeld, maar op de een of andere manier springt de vonk niet over. Of dat nu komt door de grote hoeveelheid oubolige koortjes met veel ooh's, aah's en yeah's, die je in het AOR-genre vaak hoort, of het feit dat ik het allemaal al eens eerder heb gehoord en dat de composities gewoon niet echt bijzonder zijn. Ik weet het niet, maar er is geen song die beklijft. De productie is redelijk goed, al had het gitaargeluid wat voller gemogen. De twaalf nummers op Cats And Dogs hebben samen een speelduur van ruim 45 minuten. Dat betekent dat een track gemiddeld nog geen vier minuten klokt en dat is waarschijnlijk het probleem dat ik met dit album heb. Geen uitgesponnen solo's, geen mooi opbouw van de nummers, maar wel strakke songs en popachtige refreinen. Voor mij is Cats And Dogs niet meer dan een doorsneealbum dat zeker zijn weg naar het publiek zal weten te vinden, maar dat door het hoge rock- en AOR-gehalte met bluesinvloeden niet thuishoort in de top van het genre.

Talisman began in the early nineties as a project initiated by bassplayer extraordinaire Marcel Jacob (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum), who eventually found a solid partner in the Puertorican native Jeff Scott Soto with whom he worked in his years with Malmsteen's Rising Force. In fact Cats And Dogs is the successor to the album Truth (2000), which was commercially not an impressive achievement, although Jacob and Scott Soto did also record a fine album in the vein of earlier work by Talisman. Most of us will also be aware that Jeff Scott Soto produced several solo albums during the past years, so these guys are being terribly productive. After the temporary split Talisman is back with former members Fredrik Akesson (guitar) and Jamie Borger returning behind the drumkit. These fine and experienced musicians offer us twelve new songs in a genre what we can cal 'hard rock with a twist'. I agree this album should be classified under melodic metal, but the many catchy and almost popmusic-like refreins where Scott Soto sings multiple overdubs and thus creating background choirs that sound almost like The Beatles, make AOR come into mind as well. There's also some blues influence recognizable, for example in Outta My Way. You can hear that Åkesson would love to take the songs in a heavier direction and his nimble fingers play the guitar sounding a bit like Mattsson's and give proof of him being inspired by the likes of Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath). Lost In The Wasteland is in the vein of Black Sabbath, whatsoever. Tracks like Love Will Come Again and Wherever, Whenever, Whatever are ordinary but solid and good AOR-songs. The rest of Cats And Dogs can be compared with Scott Soto's latest album Prism or the Talisman-classics Genesis and Humanimal. So, good compositions, lots of subtle changes in pace and/or style characterize this heavy, but very melodic album and of course it has that wonderful and exceptional bass playing by Jacob whom I tend to call the Yngwie Malmsteen on the bass guitar. The production is okay, but could have been just a bit more 'fat' and I would have liked the guitars to have sounded a little less distorted. One might say that Cats And Dogs is a fine, but not an extraordinary album that brings Talisman definitely back in the good direction! New remasters of the backcatalogue are announced so there is more to come.
