BACK TO ORION (NL+E)

Het Italiaanse duo BioNight bestaat uit Mac en Sbrizzi Fabio, waarvan vooral Mac redelijke bekendheid geniet door zijn indrukwekkend aantal soloalbums. Gezien de titel Back To Orion zou je zweverige space-achtige muziek verwachten, maar als je de cd afspeelt, valt dat in positieve zin eigenlijk best mee. De grootvaders van de elektronische muziek (EM), zoals Tangerine Dream (TD), Jean Michel Jarre en Klaus Schulze zijn duidelijk terug te horen in de heerlijke muziek die dit duo maakt. De opening doet denken aan de rustige en melodieuze TD van eind jaren zeventig, daarna gaat het over in een rustige Jarre, terwijl het derde stuk meer een Schulze-stempel draagt. Het nummer Moon Rocks lijkt een kruisbestuiving tussen TD, Nova en Peru, en Little Gravity is vergelijkbaar met TD uit de periode Phaedra en Stratosfear (1974-1976). De ruimtereis wordt vervolgd met Falling, een nummer dat gekarakteriseerd wordt door lichte percussie en een pakkende bas, zoals we die kennen van bijvoorbeeld Depeche Mode, dus licht neigend naar synthipop. De laatste en tevens langste track van ruim veertien minuten bevat een mooie, gelijkmatige opbouw waarbij ijle synthgeluiden langzaam maar zeker worden overstemd door sequence-achtige onderliggende thema’s. Samen met hoogtonige melodietjes en een keur aan begeleidende achtergrondgeluiden ontstaat een sfeer die ook nadrukkelijk aan TD uit beginjaren zeventig doet denken. Back To Orion van BioNight is een uitstekend album in de traditie van de Berlijnse School. Het laat de ‘goeie ouwe tijd’ herleven zonder dat Mac en Fabio zich schuldig maken aan plagiaat.

The Italian duo BioNight consists of Mac and Sbrizzi Fabio. Mac is being pretty well-known as a solo artist for he has released an impressive number of solo albums all ready. The title Back To Orion gives us a clue as to what kind of music one might expect: floating and dreaming into space? Not quite, however: listening to the disc that’s not really the case and I mean that in a very positive sence! The influences of the grandfathers of electronic music (EM), Tangerine Dream (TD), Jean Michel Jarre and Klaus Schulze can be detected easily throughout this delicious piece of music of these two men. The opening track reminds me of TD from the late seventies, than we hear a gentle Jarre-like passage and the third one is more in the vein of Schulze. Moon Rocks is a sort of a synthesis between TD, Nova and Peru, relatively well-known acts from the Netherlands in the eighties, while Little Gravity can be compared to TD’s music from the time they released Phaedra and Stratosfear (1974-197). Our journey through space continues with Falling, a tune characterised by subtle percussion and a nice catchy bass-loop as we know from for instance Depeche Mode, so slightly in the direction of the ever so popular synthi-pop. The last and also longest track of over fourteen minutes is built up quite nicely: distant synthesizer sounds make way for sequencer-like themes. Together with the high pitched melodies and a wide variety of colourful accompanying sounds BioNIght creates an atmosphere again as TD from the earlier seventies at their best. In conclusion I would say this is an excellent release in the Berlin School-genre and the best news is that Mac and Fabio let us relive 'those good old days' without the slightest suspicion of stealing melodies from their sources of inspiration.
