HEADPHONE CONCERT (NL+E)

De in 1964 geboren Duitser Wolfgang 'Der' Spyra is geen onbekende op het gebied van elektronische muziek (EM). Hij concerteerde op het Nederlandse E-Live Festival in 1999, maar ook op het Alfa Centauri festival in 2002. Eveneens uit 2002 dateert het livealbum Headphone Concert dat vier lange stukken bevat en het wat kortere stuk Quinto. In 2004 werd dit concert uitgebracht op het kleine Poolse label Wydawnictwo. Samen met Robert Golla (gitaar, kalimba), Jo Mar Gardena (viool, percussie), Jochen Krajewski (fluit, stem) en Chris Lang (toetsen) speelt Spyra muziek die soms wat weg heeft van Cosmic Hoffmann, maar die ook wel elementen uit de jazz en fusion bevat. Jeden opent atmosferisch met ijle akkoorden op synthesizer, à la Klaus Schulze worden er sequences en ritme toegevoegd, waarna de subtiele gitaar wat gaat tokkelen en langzaam wordt uitgebouwd tot soloinstrument. Golla’s spel geeft die wat jazzy ‘touch’ aan dit 25 minuten lange nummer, waarvan je het laatste gedeelte ambient zou kunnen noemen. Dat geldt ook voor het begin van Two dat halverwege gaat swingen met behulp van ritme en een zware bassynth en vervolgens rustig weg dreutelt. Ook de derde track Drei is heel rustig en atmosferisch en gaat naadloos over in wat vermoedelijk het Oost-Europese woord voor 'vier' is. De sfeer heeft veel weg van Tangerine Dream, maar de orgelgeluidjes zijn wat nerveuzer en de gitaarklanken gaan veel meer richting jazz. De wat modernere ritmische geluidjes klinken prettig, terwijl aan het tweede deel te horen is dat er geïmproviseerd wordt, want de gitaarsolo’s lopen niet steeds synchroon met de sequences en de begeleiding. In het laatste deel wordt de muziek weer wat kosmisch en horen we ijle vioolklanken. Quinto doet enigszins aan Mind Over Matter doet denken. De jazzy inslag ligt mij persoonlijk minder, maar desondanks is Headphone Concert een alleszins aardige cd.

The German musician Wolfgang Spyra is no stranger in the field of electronic music (EM). He performed during the Dutch E-Live Festival in 1999, and he also gave a concert at the Alfa Centauri festival in 2002. The live album Headphone Concert, containing four long pieces and the shorter Quinto, also dates from 2002. It was released in 2004 by the small Polish label Wydawnictwo. Together with Robert Golla (guitar, kalimba), Jo Mar Gardena (violin, percussion), Jochen Krajewski (flute, voice) and Chris Lang (keyborads), Spyra plays music that sometimes resembles Cosmic Hoffmann a bit, but it also contains jazz and fusion elements. Jeden opens atmospherical with thin chords on synth followed by sequences à la Klaus Schulze and rhythms are added, whereupon the subtle guitar starts to pluck and gradually is extended to become the solo instrument. Golla’s playing gives a somewhat jazzy touch to this 25-minute track of which the last part can be called ambient. Likewise, the beginning of Two halfway through starts to swing and then quietly saunters away. The third track is also very quiet and atmospherical and it seamlessly fades into that which probably is the Eastern European word for ‘four’. The atmosphere is much like Tangerine Dream, only the organ sounds are a bit more in the direction of jazz. The more modern rhythmic sounds are pleasant, whereas in the second part some improvisation can be heard, for the guitar solos do not always go well with the sequences and the accompaniment. In the last part, the music becomes somewhat cosmic again and we hear thin violin sounds. Quinto is the last track, which reminds me of Mind Over Matter. I do not like the rather jazzy character of yhis CD, but nevertheless it is a nice album in every aspect.
