THE GARDEN (NL+E)

Salva Moreno, de Spaanse beoefenaar van melodieuze elektronische muziek (EM) is inmiddels geen onbekende meer in dat genre. The Garden is een geremasterde heruitgave van het eerder in 2000 uitgebrachte album met extra MP3’s om de muziek ook eenvoudig op een i-Pod te kunnen afspelen. De geluidskwaliteit is mooi en sprankelend. De dertien tracks zijn goed voor ruim een uur muziek met referenties aan vooral Jean MIchel Jarre, zoals in Transylvanic en Lycanthrope 2000. Andere referenties zouden bijvoorbeeld Yanni kunnen zijn (Witches on The Radiowaves) en sommige passages zijn ook te vergelijken met Future World Orchestra. De lachjes, de gesproken teksten en de ah's en mm's op de achtergrond passen wel aardig in het geheel, maar de gewijde kerkelijke (koor)zang had van mij achterwege mogen blijven. Vanwege deze kerkzang doen tracks als Christmas Suite en Sacrifice wat aan een rustige vorm van Era denken. Diverse tracks zijn vrij ritmisch en allemaal hebben ze een duidelijke structuur. De muziek is geïnspireerd op de bijbelse tuin, waarin goed en kwaad en de daarbij behorende emoties worden vertaald naar muziek. Veel passie en emoties ondersteund met geluiden van drums en bekkens onder meer in Desiderata II, waarin Moreno laat horen pianoles te hebben gehad. Lichtvoetige en wat donkerder melancholieke stukken wisselen elkaar af, waarbij Legend Of True voor mij een hoogtepunt is. Dit nummer bevat klavecimbelklanken, elektrische piano tegen een fraaie orkestrale achtergrond met hier en daar op de voorgrond een ijle synthesizer met het geluid van orgel en fluit. De track Limbo, die in het begin van een grijnslacherig stemmetje wordt voorzien, had ook op het recent uitgebrachte Theatre Des Vampires kunnen staan. Een fraai en gedragen stuk is Yvonnita, zonder ritmeboxen, maar waarin de synth- en gesamplede accordeonklanken worden gedragen door een orkestraal klanktapijt. The Garden is een gevarieerd en sprankelend album van Psicodreamics dat ondanks enkele kritische kanttekeningen een zeer ruime voldoende scoort.

The Spanish electronic musician Salva Moreno is under the moniker of Psicodreamics no longer an unknown artist in the genre of electronic music (EM). The Garden was released in 2000, but now Salva puts out a fully remastered version containing extra MP3-files to make it easier for the owner to put Moreno’s music on Ipod as well. The sound quality is very good and sparkling and the album contains thirteen tracks, together well over an hour of music. References are mainly Jean-Michel Jarre in tracks like Transylvanic and Lycanthrope 2000. Other artists one could refer to are for example Yanni in Witches On The Radiowaves and in some parts maybe even the Dutch duo Future World Orchestra. The laughs, spoken words and background ahh’s and mmm’s fit the music rather well, but I wouldn’t have been disappointed if the church-like choir singing had been skipped. Because of this almost Gregorian chanting, some tracks like Christmas Suite and Sacrifice remind me of the more gentle pieces of Era. Several tracks have got nice rhythms and grooves and they have a solid structure. The music was inspired by the Garden of Eden, in which good and evil and all emotions that go with them were translated into musical tales. Lots of passion and emotions are emphasized by sounds of drums and cymbals in for instance Desiderata II, a track in which Moreno also shows he was taught to play the piano. Frivolous and darker, more melancholic pieces alternate each other. The highlight for me is a song called Legend Of True. It sounds like a harpsichord, an electric piano and a beautiful tasteful orchestration and featuring some melodies by flute and organ samples. Limbo kicks off with a teasing grin and could easily have been a track from the recently released album Theatre Of Vampires. On the other hand we have Yvonnita, a majestic orchestral piece without the use of the rhythm box and the delicate melodies are played by synthesizer and accordion (or sample). The Garden is a sparkling album full of variety and in spite of a single critical note, a total score well above average! On his site there are some samples available, so you can judge for yourself whether it is an album worth buying or not.
