BLACK LIGHT (NL+E)

In de Klassieke Elektronische Muziekserie is dit niet de laatste cd van Mac, maar het is wel een album dat hij in 2005 opnam tijdens zijn revalidatie van de verwondingen die hij ruim een jaar eerder opliep bij een ongeluk met een motorzaag. Black Light is weliswaar gegoten in de stijl van de groten van de Berliner Schule, en dan vooral Tangerine Dream (TD), maar de tien tracks hebben toch duidelijk een eigen gezicht en zijn samen goed voor een dik uur luistergenot, want dat mag je gerust stellen. Het wat macabere begin van If I Have To wordt al snel verrijkt met een van zijn vele heerlijke sequences, die op hun beurt weer worden aangevuld tot een wat complexer geheel. Daar overheen komen weer ijle melodielijnen en wordt het nummer statig en rustig afgebouwd. De diepe emoties van de mens Mac zijn mijns inziens uitstekend verklankt, zoals in Blade Of Loneliness. De pijn, de wil om te herstellen en het goede in het leven te hervinden beeldt hij muzikaal prachtig uit. Ook de opbouw van All Wrong kan zich meten met het mooiste van TD beginjaren tachtig. Natuurlijk mist Mac de originaliteit van TD maar Black Light is beslist geen domme namaak en het is in het hedendaagse EM-aanbod voor mij persoonlijk een verademing. Black LIght is not Mac's newest creation in his Classic Electronic Music series, but an album that he recorded in 2005 during his recuperation after an unpleasant accident with a motorised saw three years ago. Firmly rooted in the style of the masters of the Berlin School - most notably Tangerine Dream (TD) - these ten tracks certainly manage to retain their own identity and are good for more than an hour’s listening pleasure. The somewhat macabre opening of If I Have To is quickly filled with one of his many wonderful sequences that, in turn, evolves into a more complex track. Flowing over this comes a couple of delicate melodies and then the piece settles down for a stately and peaceful end. In my opinion, the deeper personal emotions of Mac himself are often audible, as is the case in Blade Of Loneliness, the pain and the will to heal, along with the desire to rediscover the good things in life are beautifully portrayed here. The build-up of All Wrong also matches the best of the music TD recorded at the beginning of the eighties. Of course this isn’t quite the same level of originality as TD, but Black LIght is absolutely no dumb copy! It's a breath of fresh air in today’s market.
