BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY (NL+E)

De Oostenrijker Heinz Strobl, beter bekend als Gandalf, behoeft amper introductie. Met ruim twintig albums op zijn naam, verwent deze multi-instrumentalist ons al jaren met overwegend instrumentale muziek. Hij maakt een prachtige mix van elektronische muziek met progressieve trekjes, folkachtige muziek en met name het laatste decennium ook etnische muziek met new age-invloeden. Op Between Earth And Sky krijgt de luisteraar weliswaar een enigszins voorspelbaar, maar wel wonderschoon palet van atmosferische en dromerige klanken voogrschoteld. In de twaalf stukken die ruim een uur klokken, heeft zijn muziek eenzelfde sfeer en uitstraling als de muziek van Enya. Ofschoon dit nergens staat vermeld in het cd-boekje, gaat het hier helaas om een compilatie die geen nieuw en origineel werk bevat. Op Gandalfs website staat overigens wel vermeld dat dit album een verzamelaar is. Het betreft nummers uit de periode1994 tot 2001 met sfeerinvloeden vanuit de hele wereld, maar met als duidelijke overeenkomst, een herkenbare structuur en mooie, rustige melodietjes. Gastmuzikanten op dit album zijn Peter Aschenbrenner op saxofoon en diverse fluiten en de celliste White Horse. Beiden verzorgen ook een deel van de bescheiden zangpartijen. Zelf bespeelt Strobl zoals gewoonlijk diverse gitaren, toetsen en percussie. Voor niet Gandalf-ingewijden is deze cd een meer dan prettige kennismaking; voor anderen is het een overbodige schijf.

There is no need to introduce the Austrian Heinz Strobl, better known as Gandalf. For years and years - and after over twenty releases - this multi-instrumentalist still entices us with his mostly instrumental music. It's a beautiful mix of electronic music that is sometimes a bit progressive, influenced by folk music, and, especially in the last ten years, guided by ethnical influences. Although the music is somewhat predictable on Between Earth And Sky, the listener gets to hear a wonderful pallet of sounds, atmospherical and dreamy. In over an hour of music, the master gives you twelve pieces, all of which radiate a sphere similar to that of Enya. Although it is not mentioned on the CD or in the booklet, this album is a compilation and there are no new pieces of music on it. However, the web site mentions that this album is a collection indeed. The tracks are from the years 1994 through 2001, and they contain atmospherical influences from throughout the world. But they have a clear similarity and an identifiable structure with beautiful and tranquil melodies. Guest musicians on this album are Peter Aschenbrenner on saxophone and on numerous flutes, and White Horse on cello. Both take part in the modest vocals. As usual, Gandalf plays numerous guitars, keyboards and percussion. For those who aren’t familiar with the music of Gandalf, this is more than a nice introduction, but for people who are familiar with his works, this is a superfluous disk.
