AUDION (1981), heruitgave (NL+E)

Audion, het vijfde album van de Amerikaan Larry Fast onder het pseudoniem Synergy, behoort wat mij betreft tot het beste wat hij heeft opgenomen. De tien korte stukken en een bonusje van anderhalve minuut zijn goed voor ruim drie kwartier Synergy op zijn best. Eigenzinnige geluiden, hier en daar een orgeltje en niet overheersende, maar wel duidelijk aanwezige niet op echte drums gelijkende percussie. Het majestueuze Orbit Five, het hoogtepunt Electric Blue, het klassiek getinte Ancestors en het wat dreigende After The Earthquake met minimale percussionele elementen en meer orkestraties. Verder het eveneens het op klassieke kamermuziek gelijkende Falcons And Eagles en Flight Of The Looking Glass dat uit hetzelfde hout gesneden is met elektronische paukenslagen. Een wat vrolijker en meer eigentijds nummer is Shibolet en heel toepasselijk wordt het album met An End To History afgesloten, dat wat aan Leonard Bernsteins Maria uit de West Side Story doet denken. De bonus is een demo van After The Earthquake, een smakelijk toetje omdat deze versie duidelijk anders is met alleen synths en een ander geluid. Aangezien Audion destijds slechts in beperkte oplage op cd is verschenen, is deze heruitgave absoluut interessant voor de liefhebbers van elektronische muziek.

Audion, the fifth album by the American musician Larry Fast under the moniker of Synergy, is the one that I consider to be his best. Ten short tracks and one bonus track comprise forty minutes of the best music by Synergy with wayward sounds, some periodic organ sounds and distinct, but not dominating, unusual drum based percussion. Starting with the majestic Orbit Five, the album moves to the highpoint of Electric Blue and to the classically toned track Ancestors. After The Earthquake features more orchestration and a reduced percussive element. Falcons And Eagles adheres to classical chamber music with Flight Of The Looking Glass in much the same mould, but with the addition of electronic kettledrums. Shibolet is more joyful and contemporary than the other tracks. The appropriately titled last track called An End To History reminded me of the song Maria from the musical West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. The tasty bonus is the markedly different demo version of After The Earthquake, which has a totally alternative synthesiser sound to that found on the rest of the album. Audion is an extremely interesting re-release, as the original CD on the Passport-label had a very limited circulation.
