AQUA (NL+E)

De Braziliaanse koningen van de progmetal zijn terug... en hoe! Dit 'water' van Angra is overweldigend, gaat van een bron naar een beekje, zwelt aan tot een machtige, kolkende rivier en stroomt via een waterval soms naar een rimpelende, dan weer naar een kolkende oceaan. Aqua lest de dorst, het smaakt naar meer en vooral het gitaarwerk van Rafael Bittencourt en Kiko Loureiro is watervlug. Aqua bevat een vreemde en tegelijk een uitdagende mengeling van invloeden uit metal, progressieve rock, klassieke muziek en Latin, terwijl sommige stukken ook trekjes van goede popmuziek en zelfs volksmuziek vertonen. Een andere bijzonderheid is dat drummer Ricardo Confessori, na zijn avontuur met Shama(a)n, weer terug is op het oude nest. Daarmee heeft Angra nu weer drie van zijn oorspronkelijke vijf leden in de gelederen, althans van de line-up die het langst heeft bestaan! De stem van Edu Falaschi lijkt vooral in de rustige stukken erg op die van de voormalige frontman André Matos, alleen in de wat ruigere stukken is zijn manier van zingen wat schreeuweriger. Het album opent opera-achtig met een gedragen aankondiging, waarna het geweld van de dubbele basdrums losbarst en de flitsende gitaarloopjes je om de oren vliegen. De derde track Awake From Darkness vertoont wat trekjes van Dream Theater met diverse tempowisselingen, terwijl iets over de helft een zoetsappig instrumentale passage met viool is ingelast, gevolgd door weergaloze gitaarsolo's. Een kalmer eerste deel van track vier met veel piano doet erg aan Matos denken, maar wat spelen de heren mooi en wat kan Falashi fraai gedoseerd zingen. Bij het horen van de begintonen van Rage Of The Waters moest ik erg aan Fates Warning denken: ijzersterk, maar toch pure metal, al zijn de orkestraties niet van de lucht en laat ook bassist Felipe Andreoli zich van zijn beste kant zien. In dit nummer is ook een stukje onvervalste Latin-muziek verweven. Viool en akoestische gitaren domineren het begin van de ballad Spirit Of The Air, een juweeltje mede doordat men het tempo daarna niet al te heftig opschroeft. In Hollow wordt de metalsignatuur verweven met orkestraties die soms afkomstig lijken te zijn uit een film met wat enge beelden. Deze track is weer totaal anders met dit keer een prog-getinte passage die van Syzygy had kunnen zijn. A Monster In Her Eyes is een combinatie van een ballad met een melodieus, wat popachtig geluid. Dit aan H2O opgedragen album eindigt in rustiger vaarwater met Ashes, dat te vergelijken is met een heerlijk nummer van Star One maar dan met veel piano en een orkestje.

Aqua is een ijzersterke comeback van Angra, maar wel een in het randgebied van 'ons' genre. Het album is naar mijn smaak net een tikkeltje minder subliem dan Temple Of Shadows uit 2004.

After four years of absence the worldwide renowned Brazilian prog metal act Angra is back to the front with an album dedicated to Aqua (water). After his adventure in Shama(a)n, Ricardo Confessori returned to the band, so with founder member Rafael Bittencourt and long time member Kiko Loureiro they are in fact 3/5 of Angra in their longest lasting line-up. Together with bass player Felipe Andreoli and singer Edu Falaschi they seem to have dealt with all their management problems and they are ready to take the prog metal world by storm. An unusual opening of the album with thunder clashing sounds and someone who proclaims in Latin a sort of warning to see the water. Well, the warning seems to be appropriate because in the second track it's the familiar Angra style: speed metal with two guitars, rattling bass drums, subtle orchestrations and fabulous bass playing by Andreoli. There are lots of tempo changes and Falaschi singing in his middle and higher regions. Drummer Confessori combines technique, speed and subtleness in the next track Awake From Darkness, also an up-tempo tune with a nice melodic interlude by piano and a string ensemble, followed by delightful guitar solos by both Loureiro and Bittencourt. Sometimes the music reminds me of Dream Theater. In Lease Of Life starts as a beautiful ballad, Falashi shows he can sing quite well actually and when he sings as low as in this track, his voice resembles Angra's former lead vocalist André Matos very much. However, his screaming is not as convincing as his predecessor. But again superb guitar playing and a very melancholic non-metal ending. A reminiscence of Fates Warning at the beginning of The Rage Of The Waters and although there are orchestrations, the core of the song is metal with a symphonic twist. The bass of Andreoli has a little solo spot in this track with Latin influences, followed by a heroic duet between the two guitarists. Violins and acoustic guitars, some percussion and a Falaschi singing beautifully at the opening of Spirt Of The Air. Some instrumental pieces remind me of the later works by New Trolls and in spite of the metal touch, this track remains very melodic. Leave the rhythm section out and you have a nice pop tune from the fifties or early sixties. Dream Theater with Derek Sherinian return in Hollow . Furthermore we have a nice catchy chorus and a little interlude that reminds me of the Dixie Dregs with some jazz-rock influences. I couldn't help thinking of Syzygy while listening to this track. A Monster In Her Eyes combines a ballad with a melodic, somewhat pop-like sound. Once more the guitarists show their abilities to play very fast and yet very melodic solos.In Weakness Of A Man you'll hear an interesting combination of metal, jazz-rock, Latin and rock: a delightful solo with a genuine wah-wah pedal and some exquisite harmonies. The turbulence in the 'water' disappears almost completely in Ashes, a track full of melancholy, Falashi at his best, lots of piano and orchestrations and the music comes close to a mixture of Eric Carmen and Star One, odd as it may seem. What a joy to be able to hear such wonderful guitarists!

This come back is very convincing and it's Angra's second one since Matos, Luis Mariutti and Confessori left. Although the album Temple Of The Shadows is slightly better in my opinion, I'd wish every prog metal band could come up with this quality in their music. It would be a very pleasant surprise if Angra would decide to tour in Europe because then I finally would have a chance to see them live for the first time. Don't drown in this 'water', but drink as much as you please, it tastes really good!
