In april 2020 verscheen Human. :||: Nature., het negende album van de van oorsprong Finse formatie Nightwish. Het is de opvolger van het indrukwekkende album Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015). Nadat deze cd was uitgebracht, volgde een tournee die tot april 2016 duurde. Daarna laste de band een welverdiende pauze van een jaar in. In 2018 stond er echter weer een grote tournee gepland, waarvan de dvd Decades Live In Buenos Aires het resultaat is. Tuomas Holopainen, het meesterbrein achter de band, verraste in 2018 door onder de naam Auri een prachtig melodieus album uit te brengen met zijn eega Johanna Kurkela (zang, viool) en bandlid Troy Donockley (ex-Iona). Marko Hietala (bas, zang) zat ook niet stil en kwam rond de jaarwisseling met het sterke soloalbum Pyre Of The Black Heart en recentelijk stond hij zelfs met een eigen band in De Melkweg te Amsterdam. Zangeres Floor Jansen kreeg na het laatste concert van Nightwish op 26 november 2018 in Amsterdam, het verzoek of zij zou willen deelnemen aan het tv-programma Beste Zangers. Dat werd een groot succes en begin dit jaar mocht zij, mede daardoor, de Popprijs 2019 in ontvangst nemen. Nadat ik het nieuwe dubbelalbum had beluisterd, mocht ik aanschuiven bij de ‘grande dame de metal’ voor een interview.

Floor, je bent net terug uit Gotenburg. Ben je al een beetje bijgekomen?

"Het is natuurlijk nooit prettig om vertraging te hebben, maar ik heb eigenlijk een vraag voor jou: wat vond je van ons nieuwe album?"

“De eerste cd ging er in als zoete koek! Ik vond het opvallend dat Marko Hietala en Troy Donockley beiden een nummer zingen. Aan de tweede cd moest ik erg wennen. Prachtige muziek, dat zeker, maar het is meer op klassiek georiënteerde filmmuziek en totaal anders dan je van Nightwish zou verwachten…”

“Nightwish heeft in het verleden wel vaker eigenwijze dingen gedaan, maar zo’n klassieke suite van rond de 23 minuten is inderdaad wel een grote verrassing, temeer daar het eigenlijk geen bandstuk is. Tuomas Holopainen en Troy Donockley spelen een bescheiden rol en ik zing een beetje, maar het is qua thematiek en gevoel wel een logisch vervolg op The Greatest Show On Earth van ons vorige album. Als Tuomas een wat mindere songschrijver zou zijn, zouden de overige bandleden misschien wat fronsend hebben gekeken, maar als je zo kunt componeren en dit komt er uit, dan kunnen we alleen maar zeggen: wauw! gaaf! bedankt!”

Zou je het nieuwe album een conceptalbum kunnen noemen?

"Nee, Human. :ii: Nature. is geen conceptalbum, maar het is wel gerelateerd aan de mens en de evolutie, vooral waar het muziek maken betreft. De openingstrack Music gaat over het prille begin van muziek maken: het tikken van een steen op een steen, Shoemaker gaat over Eugene Shoemaker die altijd astronaut wilde worden, maar dat fysiek niet aankon en van wie uiteindelijk de as op de maan is beland (Ad Astra) na zijn plotselinge overlijden door een auto-ongeluk. Het door Troy gezongen Harvest gaat over de poging om de dood te verslaan en How’s The Heart handelt over empathie; vraag gewoon eens hoe het met iemand gaat. Er staat zelfs een stukje over mij in, namelijk hoe ik mijn man ontmoette: ‘we met where the cliffs meet the sea’ en in het tweede couplet over onze dochter: ‘now there’s one who came for me, a child of light, another tale.’ Zo mooi, ik kreeg tranen in mijn ogen!"

Ik vind jouw zang op deze cd veelzijdiger dan op het vorige album. Was het opnameproces vergelijkbaar met dat voor Endless Forms Most Beautiful?

"Dat klopt inderdaad. Tuomas wilde me echt uitdagen en dat is hem heel goed gelukt! Het opnameproces was voor het overgrote deel hetzelfde. De basis is als vanouds weer gelegd in de Röskö-campsite, ons boothuis in Kitee, Finland. Onze bekende procedure is als volgt: we krijgen de muziek tevoren aangeleverd, laten haar eerst bezinken om dan vervolgens samen te gaan repeteren. We werken dan een maand lang heel intensief samen om er een mooi geheel van te maken. De drums zijn deze keer niet in Kitee opgenomen, maar in de studio vanwege de betere geluidskwaliteit."

Drummer Kai Hahto is nu een vast bandlid. Betekent dit dat Jukka Nevalainen nooit meer bij Nightwish zal drummen?

"Kai is inderdaad nu een vast bandlid. Dat is op zich prima, maar het is uiteraard wel jammer dat we Jukka niet meer in de band zullen terug zien."

Wat vind je zelf van de videoclip van Noise, de single van het nieuwe album. Was het leuk om die te maken en wie kwam met de ideeën?

"Het was een heftige productie zeker voor de mensen die deze video hebben opgenomen. Het onderwerp leent zich uiteraard voor verschillende visualisaties, maar ik vind het heel gaaf hoe de regisseur hierin echte rollen heeft gecreëerd. Tuomas wilde eerst geen video. Toen ik hem vertelde dat ik dat wel jammer zou vinden, raakte hij weer gemotiveerd om er iets bijzonders van te maken. Dus het werd een clip met bijna Hollywood-kwaliteit en een hoge resolutie. In eerste instantie wilde Tuomas zelf niet meespelen in de video. De regisseur heeft er echter voor gezorgd dat we allemaal meedoen, omdat we niet als muzikanten in die clip te zien zijn. We zijn echte karakters die allemaal stereotiepe, inhoudsloze mensen visualiseren, levend in het geschreeuw van een oppervlakkige wereld met dito gedrag waaraan we verslaafd zijn geraakt zijn, zoals de afhankelijkheid van mobiele telefoons."

Ondanks het coronavirus gaat drummer Hannes Van Dahl van Sabaton in maart met zijn band naar Rusland, terwijl jullie de tournee in april in China beginnen. Is dat momenteel wel wenselijk?

"Nou, vooralsnog is de tournee in China uitgesteld; mogelijk schuiven die concerten door naar oktober. Ik hoorde net dat ook de promotionele tour in Italië is afgelast, dus het virus heeft wel degelijk gevolgen voor de muziekbranche."

Na de wereldtournee heb je even tijd gehad voor jullie dochter Freja? Kun je als ouders, die beiden een carrière in de muziekbusiness hebben, wel iets van een gezinsleven hebben?

"Het wordt voor ons wel een steeds grotere uitdaging om een gezinsleven te hebben, maar tot op heden hebben we het steeds zó kunnen regelen dat ten minste een van ons thuis is. Het voordeel is, dat als we thuis zijn dan zijn we ook écht thuis, de hele dag. Verder worden onze activiteiten altijd ruim tevoren gepland. Als ik dat vergelijk met mijn zus Irene, die net als haar man een ‘gewone’ fulltime baan heeft, dan kan ik met een gerust hart zeggen dat ik meer tijd met mijn dochter kan doorbrengen dan zij met haar twee kinderen!" 

In Nederland gaan kinderen al met vier jaar naar school en daarvoor vaak al naar een kinderdagverblijf. Hoe is dat in Zweden geregeld?

"In Zweden gaan kinderen pas met zes jaar naar school, dus wij hebben nog wel wat speling. Freja gaat al wel naar een kinderdagverblijf dat deel uitmaakt van een kleine dierentuin. Het is als het ware een onderdeel van een kinderboerderij met verschillende dieren van Zweedse origine en dat is voor haar een puur paradijs! Mede doordat we zelf twee paarden, twee katten en een hond hebben, is ze gewend aan dieren. Onze hond is een echte jager, een Duitse Staande. Die mag niet het hele jaar los lopen in verband met de bescherming van wildlife. Als hij de kans krijgt, bijt hij behalve vogels ook katten dood, zelfs onze eigen katten, dus dat is steeds opletten geblazen. Dat wist ik tevoren dus niet!"

Je woont sinds enkele jaren in Zweden. Mis je Nederland?

"Ik ben vijfeneenhalfjaar geleden geëmigreerd, eerst naar Finland en sinds vier jaar woon ik in Zweden. Ik mis Nederland niet echt, maar wel bepaalde eetwaren, zoals Nederlandse kaas. De Zweden doen wel hun best, maar ja… Als ik in Nederland ben dan gaat er wel vaak appelstroop en een stuk kaas mee naar Zweden! Nederland is klein, dus alles is gemakkelijk bereikbaar en beschikbaar. Dat is in Zweden veel minder. Ik wip geregeld over om mijn familie te zien en sinds Beste Zangers ook veel voor mijn werk."

Hoe ben je eigenlijk bij Beste Zangers verzeild geraakt? Speelde het feit dat je in 2018 de Buma ROCKS! Export Award ontving een rol, denk je?

"Ik weet het eigenlijk niet en het kan me eerlijk gezegd ook niet zo veel schelen. Mogelijk door die onderscheiding of misschien doordat ik heb meegedaan aan De Reünie of aan De Tiende Van Tijl. Het kan ook zijn dat zanger Tim Akkerman (ex-Di-rect) als rocker betrokken is geraakt bij Beste Zangers en dat men metal wat meer bekendheid wilde geven bij het grote publiek. Wie zal het zeggen?"

Je hebt bij Beste Zangers je veelzijdigheid kunnen etaleren en veel indruk gemaakt. Welke consequenties heeft het succes van jouw deelname voor jou persoonlijk en voor Nightwish?

"De gevolgen waren verrassend groot, niet alleen verkocht Nightwish het Ziggo Dome binnen de kortste keren uit, maar er kwamen ook ontzettend veel aanvragen binnen voor mij om mijn eigen shows met diezelfde liedjes te gaan doen. Het zou jammer zijn geweest als ik daarmee niets zou hebben gedaan, want ook qua tijdsplanning was het mogelijk. De Marcel Fisser Band, de huisband van het programma, was er direct voor in en zo werden er zes shows gepland met die iTunes hits, een enkel nummer van Nightwish en nummers van Northward, After Forever en ReVamp (bands waar Floor ook deel van uitmaakte, MvBF). Die shows verkochten binnen enkele uren uit dus hebben we er nog drie aan toegevoegd. Toen die ook in korte tijd uitverkocht waren, hebben we nog een show in AFAS Live gepland. Dat vond ik best eng, maar ook die show verkocht in vijf uur uit en zelfs de tweede avond die voor Nightwish was toegevoegd was volle bak! Vorig jaar stond Nightwish in de Ziggo Dome voor zo’n twaalfduizend mensen en nu was het twee keer uitverkocht, dus ja, de consequenties zijn gigantisch gebleken, maar natuurlijk ook erg positief! Ik heb zanger Henk Poort beloofd dat we Phantom Of The Opera met hem én Nightwish gaan doen in november 2020, dus nu moet ik de bandleden zover zien te krijgen dat ze dat nummer, dat overigens op Century Child stond, gaan instuderen."

Heb je van de andere bandleden nog reacties gekregen op jouw soloactiviteiten?

"Oh zeker! Ze gunnen het me absoluut en ze waarderen het ook heel erg dat ik langs deze weg heb geprobeerd Nederland te enthousiasmeren voor ons type muziek, omdat metal in Nederland systematisch wordt genegeerd en bestempeld als ‘ontoegankelijke teringherrie’. Nu hoor ik allerlei opmerkingen, zoals: ‘goh ik wist niet dat metal zo melodieus kon zijn’ of ‘ik vind je stem zo mooi’ en daarmee is eigenlijk mijn ultieme doel bereikt, namelijk om metal onder de aandacht van een groter publiek te brengen, want dat was mijn insteek om überhaupt aan Beste Zangers mee te doen."

Je hebt bij Beste Zangers de volgende songs vertolkt: Shallow, Mama, Qué Se Siente, Winner, Vilja Lied en Phantom Of The Opera. Welk nummer was voor jou de grootste uitdaging om te doen?

"Zonder twijfel Qué Se Siente. Ik had eerst een ander nummer van Rolf Sanchez gekozen, want ik durfde zo’n nummer speciaal geschreven voor en mede door Rolf eigenlijk niet aan. Die Spaanse taal is zo ver van mijn bed met al die toeters en bellen. Dat was voor mij wel heel moeilijk, want ik kan zo’n liedje niet goed vertolken als ik er niet iets van mezelf in kan leggen. Mijn fans zouden ook niet accepteren dat ik zulke nummers klakkeloos ga zingen zonder mijn stempel erop te drukken. Ik ben zelf ook een veel te authentiek persoon om zo maar allerlei covers te zingen. Afijn, ik heb heen en weer gemaild met Marcel Fisser, hier en daar een mineurakkoord gebruikt in plaats van majeur en het tempo zo’n beetje gehalveerd. Dat maakte dat dit nummer een heel andere stijl kreeg dan het origineel en juist daardoor kon ik er wat mee! Toen we met die aanpassingen gingen repeteren viel alles op zijn plek. Wat ik ook erg lastig vond was Winner dat Tim Akkerman schreef voor zijn gehandicapte oudere broer. Die tekst is zo persoonlijk! Mede dankzij de Marcel Fisser Band heb ik me die song gelukkig ook eigen kunnen maken."

Ben je van plan om na al deze successen, je bekendheid in Nederland en na de tournee met Nightwish weer soloshows te gaan doen?

"Ik weet het echt niet! In elk geval niet op deze manier al vond ik het erg leuk om te doen. Dat ik nu ook nog op Pinkpop mag staan, vind ik wel ontzettend gaaf! (Op 21 april verbood de regering tot 1 september grote festivals als Pinkpop, MvBF). Als ik zou doorborduren op dit succes dan denk ik toch meer aan een combinatie met mijn eigen muziek. Geen metal dus, maar wel een eigen album en daarmee shows doen. Nu al kwamen er veel mensen van buiten Nederland naar mijn solo-optredens, maar als ik zelf een plaat zou uitbrengen dan wordt het zeker een internationaal gebeuren en ik heb al zo’n drukke carrière. Ik moet er dus wel heel goed over nadenken hoeveel tijd me dat kost en hoeveel tijd ik nog meer van huis weg zou willen en kunnen zijn."

Wat is je het meest bijgebleven van de recente tournee Decades Live?

"Het was een intensieve tournee, maar er waren geen uitschieters. Dat kwam vooral doordat we bij deze tour alleen in landen zijn geweest waar we altijd al optraden. Zuid-Amerika blijft apart vanwege het publiek dat echt helemaal los gaat en de chaos waarin je terecht komt. Hier in Europa is alles goed georganiseerd en alles wat je nodig hebt, wordt pijlsnel geregeld. In Zuid-Amerika duurt dat uren, áls het al geregeld wordt, maar ik kom er al sinds 2000, dus daar ben ik zo langzamerhand wel aan gewend geraakt. Overigens heb ik nu een kamer in een luxueus hotel in Amsterdam, maar die kamer is zo donker dat ik zelfs met de verlichting aan amper kan zien wat er in mijn koffer zit! Er zit niet eens een lampje bij de make-up spiegel! Hotel- en kleedkamers zijn voor mij meestal een drama."

Bijna vijf jaar na het laatste album Endless Forms Most Beautiful is er weer studiowerk, eigenlijk nog maar kort na de indrukwekkende dvd Decades Live. Intussen is er een soloplaat van Marko Hietala en zijn er jouw successen met Beste Zangers. Wat is de achtergrond van die relatief lange pauze en waarom die stroomversnelling in het laatste halfjaar?

"Na het uitbrengen van Endless Forms Most Beautiful is er een omvangrijke wereldtournee geweest die tot ver in 2016 heeft geduurd. Na een jaartje rust volgde de Decades Live tour in 2018. Marko’s soloalbum, dat ik overigens heel persoonlijk en gaaf vind, staat volledig los van de planning rond Nightwish, evenzo mijn activiteiten voor Beste Zangers, want als je eenmaal hebt toegezegd, heb je zelf het tijdschema niet meer volledig in de hand. Die dvd was volgens mij inderdaad aan de late kant, maar ja, zoiets is klaar als het klaar is en niet eerder!"

Vroeger was het album het centrale deel in de muziekbusiness en rechtstreeks gerelateerd aan de revenuen voor de bandleden. Tegenwoordig spelen de liveshows een veel belangrijkere rol. Welke rol spelen al die verschillende releases zoals cd, vinyl, earbooks en box sets?

"Ik denk dat al die geluidsdragers − met name in het metalgenre – worden uitgebracht, omdat de fans erom vragen en niet zozeer omdat wij daaraan meer verdienen. Fans willen graag iets moois in handen hebben en wij doen ons uiterste best om hen te bedienen met een keuze in kwalitatief superieure eindproducten met niet alleen een goed album, maar ook mooi artwork, gave foto’s van hoge kwaliteit, enzovoort. Daarom kan ik degene die onze promofoto’s op het internet heeft gezet wel wat aandoen! Je moest eens weten hoeveel tijd en moeite het gekost heeft om die foto’s te maken en dan zijn ze ongevraagd als wegwerpmateriaal voor iedereen te zien; ontzettend jammer!"

Volgend jaar bestaat Nightwish 25 jaar. Zijn jullie al aan het brainstormen wat je gaat doen met dit jubileum?

"Oh ja, is dat zo? We hebben net Decades Live gedaan dus het lijkt mij niet waarschijnlijk dat er vanuit de band al behoefte is om dit jubileum te gaan vieren, maar mogelijk zullen er vragen van de fans komen en dan weet je het maar nooit!"

In April 2020 Human. :||: Nature., the ninth album by Nightwish will be released as a successor to the impressive album Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015). After the release of their previous album, the band toured the world for about a year until April 2016, and subsequently took a short break. In 2018 the band began touring again, concentrated around songs from the compilation album Decades, released in March 2018. The show in Buenos Aires was recorded for the live DVD-CD Decades Live In Buenos Aires. Mastermind Tuomas Holopainen didn’t really take a break. Together with his wife Johanna Kurkela (vocals, violin) and bandmate Troy Donockley, he released a beautiful melodic album under the moniker of Auri in 2018. Marko Hietala, bassist and male vocalist for Nightwish as well as vocalist and bass player for Tarot used the break to finalize his solo album Pyre Of The Black Heart/Mustan Sydämen Rovio at the end of 2019 and he even toured in a few countries: on February 17 fans could have seen him and his band live in De Melkweg in Amsterdam. Floor Jansen, the Dutch singer with Nightwish, had received an invitation to participate in the very popular Dutch TV-program Best Singers when Nightwish was playing live in the Netherlands on November 26, 2018. She accepted the invitation and her performances throughout 2019 were hugely successful and probably due to her sudden stardom, she was awarded the Dutch Popprijs 2019 earlier this year. This prestigious award has been awarded to artists since 1986 for making a considerable contribution to Dutch pop music. Right after having listened to the forthcoming double album in its entirety I was given the opportunity to have a chat with the ‘grande dame de metal’.

Hi Floor, we already met in the hotel lobby a few hours ago. Your flight from Gothenburg was delayed a bit. Are you all recovered and revived now?

"Yeah, sure! It’s never pleasant to have delays when one’s running a tight schedule, but I’m quite okay now. Actually I have a question for you. You just listened to the new album, didn’t you? Did you like it?"

“Well, my first impression is that part one has got all the characteristics of Nightwish in a brilliant form and the two songs especially written for and sung by Marko and Troy respectively were quite a surprise. Even more of a surprise was part two: sounding more like a soundtrack, primarily instrumental music, classically oriented and played by an orchestra, not the kind of music one would expect from Nightwish.”

“Well, Nightwish has done more peculiar and extraordinary things in the past, but such a classical suite of 23 minutes is a big surprise indeed, even more so because it’s not a band piece. Tuomas only plays a little bit of keyboards, I sing a little and Troy plays his pipes and flutes. On the other hand, this piece is a pretty logical follow-up to the instrumental part of The Greatest Show On Earth from the previous album. It’s about the same theme and the music has that same soothing vibe. Now, if Tuomas would have been a less gifted songwriter, perhaps the band might have had some comments, but if one is capable of writing music like this piece we can only say: wow, really cool, thank you!” 

Would you call the new album a concept album?

"Human. :ii: Nature. is not a concept album, but the subjects of the lyrics are all about man and evolution. The opening track Music starts with the sound of a stone hitting a rock and is all about the origin of making music. The song Shoemaker is about Eugene Shoemaker who wanted to be an astronaut. Unfortunately for him he had some physical issues making it impossible for him to fulfil his dream. A fatal car accident ended his life much too soon and to honour him, his ashes were catapulted on the moon through a satellite. That can be heard in Ad Astra. The song Harvest, sung by Troy, is about the way we try to defeat death. How’s The Heart is about empathy, about simply but genuinely asking: hey, how are you? Some of the lyrical content is about me, how I met my husband: we met where the cliffs meet the sea and in the second verse Tuomas refers to our daughter: now there’s one who came for me, a child of light, another tale, so beautiful, it brought me to tears!"

How about the recording process? Has it been comparable to the routine Nightwish used on the previous album?

"I think the recording process has been about the same, with the exception of the recording of the drums. These took place in a genuine recording studio, simply because the sound was better in that studio. We all received the demo’s made by Tuomas, then we listened to them, got time to absorb it and then we got together in Kitee, in the boathouse at the Röskö campsite where we always start our rehearsals. There we worked very intensely, arranging and polishing all the songs for about a month."

I noticed that Kai Hahto is now a fulltime band member. Does this mean that we will not see Jukka Nevelainen back on stage again?

"Kai being a full member of the band was a very logical decision. Indeed, it’s a pity that we won’t play with Jukka anymore, but that’s the way it is and we may consider ourselves lucky to have Kai in the band permanently now!"

I have the impression you’re using your voice in many different ways on the new album.

"About my singing, yes, that’s absolutely true. Tuomas really wanted to challenge me and he succeeded very much in doing so!"

What’s your opinion on Nightwish’ new video clip of Noise? Did you enjoy the process of making this video and who came up with the ideas?

"Well, it has been a very intense production with a lot of people involved. Considering the subject of the song, one can images lots of possibilities for visualisations, but I think it’s really awesome how the director managed to create a role in this video for every one of us. At first, Tuomas didn’t want a video at all, but when I accidently expressed my disappointment he came round and gave his consent. It did motivate him to come up with something very special! The original idea for Tuomas was that he didn’t want to be a part of the video, but in the end the director managed to persuade him and, as said, he created a role for every band member. He really did a fantastic job. We visualize the ordinary man or woman, too busy with nothing, only thinking about themselves and yelling and screaming in their meaningless world, totally hooked on their cell-phones. So in the end it became a clip with Hollywood characteristics like high definition quality, superbly designed costumes and everything!"

It’s been quite a ride these last twenty years. Can you mention any highlights or dramas?

"That’s a tough one… Well, after my family moved to Limburg (a province in the southern part of the Netherlands, MvBF) I discovered my love for singing when I was fourteen. I participated in a musical at secondary school then. When I was sixteen I ended up auditioning for the position of background singer in a band called After Forever. In 1999 After Forever’s first EP came out and I had been ‘promoted’ to lead vocalist. I started studying at the Rock Academy in Tilburg, the first ‘not conservatory education’ in the Netherlands, so many times our teachers didn’t know exactly what to do because it was all brand-new! The Lowlands Festival and a show with Within Temptation in Mexico were highlights. After my graduation from the Rock Academy, I got genuine singing lessons from Edward Hoepelman, a senior teacher at the conservatory. He made quite a difference! Sander Gommans (guitar, grunts) and I had a relationship but we broke up and in the end Sander developed a burn-out paralyzing After Forever and subsequently leading to disbanding. It was a very difficult period for me because I couldn’t accept that After Forever had come to an end. After a while I decided to form my own band ReVamp and do everything myself and at the same time I taught at the ‘MBO Popopleiding in Dynamo’. The combination of teaching, taking care of business with ReVamp and touring turned out to be too much. I developed throat problems and I got the diagnosis burn-out… Several times I tried to pick up the pieces and start working again, but my body kept screaming not to. I had to take a break and began therapy. I was well on the road to recovery when Nightwish contacted me to replace Anette Olzon. That story is not entirely true as it has been published. Anette was two months pregnant in September 2012 and couldn’t have done the second leg of the tour anyway. Truth is, I was already preparing to join Nightwish for that second leg so the only difference compared to the original plan was that I was asked to step in at an earlier stage. After The Wacken Show in June 2013, Troy Donockley and I were asked to join Nightwish as band members. Since that first show with Nightwish my dark days were over. Meeting Hannes van Dahl, marrying him and the birth of our daughter Freja were also absolute highlights."

Did you have some quality time with your daughter Freja after the last world tour? Your husband Hannes plays drums with Sabaton and will be touring in Russia starting in March this year and Nightwish is about to start a big tour in China in April. With both parents having careers in the music business, is it possible to have a family life?

"Let me start by stating that our tour in China has been postponed due to the coronavirus. These concerts will be possibly scheduled in October, but that’s not confirmed yet. I’ve just been informed that the promotional tour in Italy has been cancelled too because of the viral outbreak there. So the corona-related problems are beginning to have an impact on our business too! With both parents having a career like Hannes and I have, it’s getting more difficult to have a family life. We try to have a social life as well but during recording sessions and especially tours it’s getting harder to maintain social contacts. We try hard to have one of us at home while the other is away but things are getting more challenging as time goes by. When I compare our situation to my sister’s I don’t think we should complain. My sister and her husband both have full time day jobs, so when they come home they are tired and especially younger children eat their meal and off to bed, so how much time do they really spend with their children? We are both working as well, but we are usually able to plan our activities in advance so most of the time we can adjust our timetables and we know everything well in advance. When we are home, we are at home and we don’t have any other obligations: we are there for our daughter 24 hours a day so we have a lot of quality time, in fact I’m pretty sure I spend more time with my daughter than my sister with her two kids!"

In the Netherlands children go to school from four years of age and even earlier they go to daycare. How is the situation in Sweden?

"In Sweden kids go to school from six years onwards, so we still have a few years before Freja really has to go to school on a daily basis. We have her now in a daycare close by where we live most of the time. This daycare is part of a small zoo with all kinds of different animals originating from Sweden. In fact this daycare is a small petting zoo, so for her it’s like paradise! We own two horses, two cats and a dog ourselves, so animal handling and being surrounded by animals is a natural thing for her. The dog we own is a German Pointer, a real hunter, and he’s not allowed to be outside off leach the whole year, because of wildlife preservation issues. If he gets the chance he will kill birds as well as cats including our own. We’ve tried to educate him not to touch our own cats, but unfortunately it didn’t work. So we have to be very cautious to protect our cats indoors as well as outdoors! We never knew about this, so this behaviour was a bit of a disappointment."

You’re living abroad for a few years now. Do you miss the Netherlands?

"I emigrated more than five years ago. At first I went to Finland and I moved to Sweden four years ago. Since I’ve been on the road for about twenty years now, I’m quite used to being away from home. I can’t say I really miss the Netherlands, but surely I miss my family. It’s just a couple of hours by plane, but there’s a distance from where we live to the airport and from Amsterdam to the south of the country, so all and all it’s not that easy but doable! I miss some of the products like cheese as well. I know the Swedish trying hard but, but yeah… And things like apple syrup. Whenever I’m in the Netherlands, I take some cheeses home most of the time and other stuff that’s hard to get in Sweden. The biggest difference between the two countries is that my country of birth is rather small and compact. It’s easy to travel from north to south or east to west and everything you want is readily available ‘around the corner’. There are always big supermarkets and lots of specialty shops within short distances, while in Sweden ordinary groceries are available in limited amounts, so there’s a huge difference in shopping and planning the two. For the recordings and TV-shows of Beste Zangers I had to be in Holland quite often, so I got to see my family and friends regularly. That was nice!"

Talking about that Dutch TV-program Beste Zangers (Best Singers), how did you get involved? Do you think your Buma ROCKS! Export Award back in 2018 played a role?

"I still don’t know exactly how I got involved, and to be honest I really don’t care. It could have been that award that sat things in motion. The speech Frank Helmink did at the ceremony was really touching and it’s a great honour to have a newly discovered insect named after you. Perhaps my appearance in the very popular TV-program De Reünie (The Reunion, a TV-show centred round former class mates of secondary schools who meet each other after many years; often there are several celebrities among them, MvBF) or another TV-show I had been invited to. Another possibility is that Tim Akkerman (ex-Di-rect, a rock band in the Netherlands, MvBF) was involved in the Beste Zangers show and possibly some of the people responsible wanted to present metal music to a wider audience."

One thing that is absolutely sure: you have been able to show millions of TV-viewers your versatility and I can safely say you left your mark and made a huge impression on many people, both spectators and organizers! Can you estimate what impact your participation and your subsequent success in Beste Zangers have been both for yourself and for Nightwish?

"The impact was huge, truly amazing and very positive! Nightwish played two shows in AFAS Live (a venue for somewhat less than 6000 people per show in 2015, MvBF). Last year we played for 12.000 people in Ziggo Dome Amsterdam and this year the show was scheduled in the Ziggo Dome again for 17.000 people and it was sold out within a few hours. For me personally there were a lot of requests to do solo shows with the tracks I had been performing for Beste Zangers and I said to myself: I have the time to do shows, The Marcel Fisser Band (house band with the TV-program Beste Zangers, MvBF) was eager to go on tour with me and after all I thought it would be a shame not to use this obvious opportunity. So we planned some shows centred round my iTunes hits, supplemented with some songs from Nightwish, Northward, After Forever and ReVamp. Those shows were sold out within a few hours, so we added three more shows: also sold out within a couple of hours. Well, we contemplated… what to do next? We agreed to do a bigger show in AFAS Live and personally I thought it was a tricky gamble, but luckily this show sold out too and in just five hours! In the meantime an extra show was scheduled for Nightwish in Ziggo Dome and that show was sold out in no time as well. So in conclusion I would say my success in this TV-program has been quite favourable for both Nightwish and for myself! I promised Henk Poort (a Dutch opera and musical singer, MvBF) that we would perform Phantom Of The Opera together on stage with Nightwish in November this year, so now I have to persuade the band to rehearse that song again for me. I don’t think it will be much of a problem because that song from Century Child song had been performed live many times before in the past."

Have your band mates responded one way or another to your solo efforts?

"Oh, yeah sure! They were all thrilled and happy for me and they really grant me this success and above all they are full of joy because of this! Everybody appreciates what I have been trying to do: make metal-music known to a wider audience. I know Within Temptation are successful abroad, but do you hear their music, or ours, or After Forever’s on the radio? Never! People tend to think all metal music is inaccessible, just a load of racket and so on and so forth. After my performances I hear people saying: ‘gosh, I love your voice’ and ‘I didn’t know metal could be so melodic’, so I think I have succeeded to reach my ultimate goal, to bring metal music to a wider audience, because that was my biggest motivation to participate in that particular series of TV-shows anyway!"

Which of the songs you performed during these series of shows were the most challenging to do for you: Shallow, Mama, Qué Se Siente, Winner, Vilja Lied, or Phantom Of The Opera?

"Without doubt it was the song Qué Se Siente. At first I picked another song from Rolf Sanchez because I was afraid to take on a song so special to him. It had been written especially for him and co-written by Rolf himself. I thought it would be too farfetched with the Spanish language, all the arrangements and you know, I just can’t sing such a song if I’m not able to put a little bit of ‘me’ in it. I’m convinced my fans wouldn’t accept it if I would go on stage just singing covers, there has to be something of ‘me’ in each track I perform. Moreover, I’m much too authentic to perform only covers. At the end, after mailing to and fro with Marcel Fisser quite a lot about how or what, we decided to pick Qué Se Siente after all. By changing the tempo drastically and change a few major chords into minor chords the track got stylistically quite different from the original and while rehearsing, all pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. Another track that was pretty difficult for me was Winner, a song especially written by Tim Akkerman for his handicapped older brother. Thanks to the cooperation and enthusiasm of The Marcel Fisser Band, I’ve been able to master this song in a way I felt comfortable to sing those lyrics."

Are you considering doing even more solo shows after the tour with Nightwish has been completed?

"I really don’t know! If I would be doing more solo shows, they will not be as the ones I have done, although it was great fun to do them and it felt great to perform in all those sold-out venues. On top of these shows getting the opportunity to perform on the famous Pinkpop Festival is really awesome, so cool! I’m thinking that if I should be able to go on the road again as a solo artist, I would choose a combination of these Beste Zangers songs and my own music. Not particularly metal but more of my own music, perhaps a solo album first and then a series of shows. Thing is, I know a lot of people from outside the Netherlands who came to see my shows. What would happen, do you think, if there would be an album of Floor Jansen, worldwide available? It would definitely mean an international affair. My career is a busy one as it is already, so I really have to contemplate how much time I have left to spend on something like a solo career and if I would want to be away from home even more. It could be disastrous for my family life so at this point I just don’t know. I have my doubts!"

Were there any special events that stood out from the last Decades Live tour?

"Not that I can remember. It was a not too long, but intense tour. On this tour we only played in countries we had been one or more times before, no special surprises there. South America is always very special because of all the audiences going completely crazy and the chaos you find yourself in. In Europe things usually have been prepared and organized to the last detail and if one has a request, the issue is solved right away. In South America a simple request takes hours to get it done, but because I’ve been performing there since 2000, I’m beginning to get used to the way they handle things. By the way, even in the hotel where I’m staying at the moment, a very respectable hotel in Amsterdam, some of the most elemental things are missing. Try to put on some make-up with only light from behind you or try to unpack your suitcase in such a dark room as I’m staying with just a tiny lightbulb on the ceiling. That’s really hopeless. And this happens in South America all the time. For me personally most hotels and dressing rooms are a real drama."

It’s been almost five years after the last studio album Endless Forms Most Beautiful, but only months after the release of the impressive live CD-DVD Decades. In the meantime Marko Hietala released a solo album and you were highly successful in Beste Zangers. ‘What are the reasons for the somewhat long pause and why these sudden rapids?

"Well, after the release of Endless Forms Most Beautiful there was a huge world tour until well into 2016. We all had a sabbatical of almost one year after that tour and we went on tour again with Decades. Marko’s solo album, which I think is really cool by the way, and my activities around Beste Zangers have had nothing to do with the planning around Nightwish. Marko had been working on this very personal solo album for quite a long time and it’s simply done when it’s done! In my case, once you agree to participate on such a series of TV-shows as Beste Zangers, the planning is out of your hands and you cannot bow out just like that. I had expected that the DVD would have been released earlier, but there must have been good reasons why it hasn’t."

A while ago the release of an album was the centre of all things happening in and around a band. It was the foundation on which the income for both record company and artist was based. Currently the live show and merchandise is a far more important part of generating income. What’s the role of all these special editions beside the ordinary CD, like earbooks, box sets and special coloured vinyls?

"As far as I’m aware, these special releases are primarily found in the heavy rock and metal genre. Apart from that fact, I didn’t receive one cent royalties from all those special After Forever Earbook releases. I just cannot imagine what kind of people would want such a product. Who is eager to hear some old demos? However, when a new album is produced, all those fancy different versions are appealing to the genuine fan rather than a way to generate more money for us. Our fans demand something special, so that’s exactly what we would like to give them: a superb choice of high quality products of which they can choose from and buy the format(s) that they like most. So we aim for producing not only a good album, but exquisite artwork, high resolution photos, et cetera. When I saw our band photos posted on the internet like they belonged to the idiot who did that, I was furious. Does such a person realize all the efforts it took to produce photos like these, all the money involved? And now, without asking permission they’re all over the internet… very, very annoying!"

Next year Nightwish may celebrate their 25^th anniversary. Have you had already brainstorm sessions about how Nightwish would like to commemorate this jubilee?

"Oh really? We just did Decades, so I don’t think it’s likely the band will feel the need to celebrate this anniversary real soon. However, it might be that our fan base will be pressing us to do something special, you never know…"
