DE LANTAARN, Hellendoorn

Sinds de heroprichting enkele jaren geleden is Focus weer een band. Dat werd gisteren duidelijk in de twee sets die de heren in De Lantaarn in Hellendoorn speelden. Met Pierre van der Linden achter de drumkit bleek het vertrouwde geluid ook weer terug en werden zowel op het podium als in het publiek generaties overbrugd, want de goedgevulde zaal herbergde zowel tieners als zestigplussers. Bobby Jacobs speelde uitstekende baslijnen en Thijs van Leer ging flink tekeer op de Hammond en wat minder frequent op de dwarsfluit. Met het recentelijk uitgebrachte Focus 9 moest het viertal, behalve oude krakers, ook het nodige nieuwe werk spelen en dat ging hen prima af. Jacobs bleek ook een uitstekende componist die de brug tussen het oude en nieuwe Focus perfect heeft weten te slaan. Van de aangezichtsverlamming bij Thijs van Leers was nagenoeg niets meer te merken, behalve een iets meer toegeknepen rechteroog en uiteraard liet de bijna 60-jarige de hoge nootjes schieten.

Zijn orgelspel evenwel was absoluut onaangetast. Vele ogen waren uiteraard gericht op gitarist Niels van der Steenhoven. Zonder te zeggen dat Jan Akkerman nu vergeten mag worden, moet ik zonder enige terughoudendheid stellen dat Niels spel een verademing was. Hij speelde gemakkelijk en wist de nummers zelfs een eigen interpretatie mee te geven zonder dat de virtuositeit echt minder was. Bovendien hadden de heren spelplezier en dat is voor Van Leer die nu al veertig jaar op het podium staat natuurlijk iets geweldigs.

Een concert dat een klasse beter was dan het optreden op de beschikbare dvd Live In America! Met Focus II, III, VII, House of the King, Hocus Pocus en Eruption was het een magistraal heerlijk avondje genieten van een unieke band met een uniek geluid. Op naar Focus X!

Since the resurrection some years ago, Focus is a band again. Proof of this was during the two sets the band played in De Lantaarn in Hellendoorn. With Pierre van der Linden behind the drumkit, the original sound and groove were back even more and if there was a bridge between generations on stage, equally in the audience for there were both teenagers and people over sixty attending in the cosy venue. Bobby Jacobs laid down excellent bass lines and Thijs van Leer roared his Hammond, but used his flute a little bit less. Recently the band put out the album Focus 9, so the band could play some new material next to the old popular tunes like House Of The King, Sylvia, Harem Scarem and a big part of the album Moving Waves. Especially the new songs sounded fresh and powerful. Jacobs proved to be an extraordinary composer and he appears to be the perfect bridge between the old and the new Focus. There seemed to be hardly any remnants of the partial facial paralysis Thijs van Leer suffered some years ago, except maybe that his right eye seems to be a little less wide opened. Understandably, at nearly sixty years of age, he skipped the high notes.

His ability to play the organ however was impeccable. Naturally all eyes were focused on the band’s new guitarist Niels van der Steenhoven. I don’t feel I should say that with Niels in the band one should forget Jan Akkerman, but it is only fair to say that Niels played very comfortably and his playing was a real treat. He was even capable of giving the older tunes his own twist without compromising the virtuosity of the playing on the original recordings. Besides, the four guys had real fun on stage and for Van Leer, who is all ready playing stages for forty years now, that must be truly wonderful!

This was a concert outclassing the performance on the available dvd Live In America by far. A truly magical and outstanding evening by a unique band with a equally unique sound. I’m eagerly awaiting Focus X!
