BIBELOT, Dordrecht

Koud na de première van de nieuwe dvd trad Xystus op in Dordrecht. Deze stad heeft een prachtige oude binnenstad, maar het is een ramp om je auto kwijt te raken, laat staan dat je zonder parkeerkosten ergens kunt parkeren! De band had in de buitengewoon gezellige ambiance van popcentrum Bibelot een groot scherm in gebruik in een soort koepel naast het podium, waarop het integrale concert werd vertoond, zoals het uiteindelijk op de dvd terechtgekomen is. De synchronisatie en de beeldkwaliteit waren niet helemaal perfect, maar je kreeg een uitstekende indruk van de prestaties van de band, het orkest en alle andere medewerkers.

Daarna was het de beurt aan Xystus zelf. Een prima opening van The Traveller werd gevolgd door vooral nummers van de cd Surreal met af en toe ook een oudje, zoals Forgotten Years en Everlasting Burden van het debuutalbum Receiving Tomorrow. Van de recentelijk uitgebrachte cd Equilibrio werden maar liefst acht van de twaalf nummers gespeeld. Het merendeel na de pauze en gitarist Bas Dolmans kreeg daarbij de hulp van zangers George Oosthoek en Simone Simons, die altijd goed zijn voor een enthousiast onthaal van de goed gevulde, maar zeker niet uitverkochte zaal. Ondanks wat haperingen in het geluid van Bas' gitaar was het een sfeervol en degelijk concert met als extra toegift een oude bekende: Why Me? Xystus toonde opnieuw aan klaar te zijn voor internationale erkenning.

The first part of the evening consisted of watching the concert in Utrecht in July 2008 with the full Utrechtsch Studenten Concert orchestra on DVD. A fairly big screen, not too bright though and not a perfect synchronization between sound and vision, but surely a good impression of what the DVD Equilibrio Live had to offer. After this film the band played live and did two sets featuring their last album Equilibrio. Sadly enough not too big an audience showed up to witness this concert. I think about 150 people attended the show. Really a shame because Xystus did well that evening.

The show opened with The Traveller from their latest album Equilibrio and there was an instant wave of recognition and enthusiasm. After Run And Hide from the album Surreal,  a mix of older songs were played both from Surreal and Receiving Tomorrow, namely Forgotten Years, A Waste of Compassion, Make it Happen, Everlasting Burden, My Saviour and R.O.C..
When Bas Dolmans picked up his guitar, he had some problems. He could hear it well but the audience couldn’t. Fortunately this was fixed after two songs. Background singer Francis Stahlecker was invited to the front of the stage by Xystus front man Dolmans and together they sang Divided We Stand from Equilibrio. She proved to bef a worthy stand in for Michelle Splietelhof. Around the break, the emphasis is on songs of Surreal: Holding On To Better Days, Voltage, Mystified and End of The Line. The rest of the show featured songs from Equilibrio, partly with special guests George Oosthoek (ex-Orphanage) and Simone Simons (Epica).

After Forever Bound with Francis Stahlecker, George Oosthoek appeared on stage and grunts Powerdrunk with Bas Dolmans replacing John Vooijs who sang this song on the album. Also a nice performance of Last Breath and then it was time for the lovely red haired lady: Simone Simons performedSong Of Creation together with Dolmans. The audience must be fan of Epica too, because with the appearance of Simone all hell seemed to break loose. All four vocalists were featured in Balance Crumbles and the finale or rather the first encore, was for Simone with Bas singing God Of Symmetry. A big hand for Xystus with their three guests, and once more the band returned to the stage for the second encore Why Me? I go fairly often to gigs and I assure you that sometimes I wonder indeed Why Me, because the performance is too short, the support act sucks or I just didn’t like the show and/or the sound, but with Xystus there were no regrets at all!
