YEARS OF A LIFETIME (NL+E)

Soms denk ik wel eens dat de sympathieke Italiaan MAC het record ‘wie brengt jaarlijks de meeste albums uit’ wil verbeteren om daarmee Tangerine Dream naar de kroon te steken. MAC is namelijk uitermate productief. Voor Years Of A Lifetime, een album dat in 2007 uitkwam, werd de basis al gelegd tussen 1988 en 1995, maar de muziek werd nooit verder uitgewerkt en opgenomen, tot nu dus. In de serie 'Just Music' is dit MAC's achtste album met evenveel tracks. De eerste nummers zijn frivool en lichtvoetig en geënt op de synthipop uit de jaren tachtig: vlotte ritmes, aardige achtergrondjes en aansprekende melodieën. Het instrumentarium is niet uitgebreid: een basis van een bassequence, een simpel en bescheiden ritme en diverse achtergrondriedeltjes met daaroverheen een eenstemmige, soms tweestemmige melodielijnen. Met name een track als A Lesson To Remember doet aan een minder bombastische Mark Shreeve denken ten tijde van Crash Head. Het vierde nummer is Ingetogen en meditatief; het wordt gevolgd door een wat minder popachtige track die meer weg heeft van Tangerine Dream in de jaren tachtig. Dan volgt muziek in de stijl van Giorgio Moroder ten tijde van Neverending Story. Years Of A Lifetime wordt afgesloten met een lange, pure retrotrack met een heerlijke sequence die eigenlijk iets uit de toon valt, maar desalniettemin erg mooi is! De percussie in het tweede deel zorgt voor 'retro met ballen'. De ruim drie kwartier durende cd had van mij wat vetter en helderder geproduceerd mogen worden. Years Of A Lifetime is voor de liefhebbers van de wat lichtere elektronische muziek een aanrader.

Sometimes I think that MAC is trying hard to beat the record of Tangerine Dream (TD) of 'releasing the biggest number of albums per year'. The sympathetic Italian electronic musician is extremely productive. I lost count all ready, but Years Of A Lifetime is a special album, because it came out recently although most of the music has been conceived between 1988 and 1995. It has not been arranged or recorded properly. In the series Just Music, this CD-R is his eighth and the album itself counts just as many tracks. The first few tracks are cheerful, frivolous and inspired by the synthi-pop from the eighties: up-tempo rhythms, nice arrangements and catchy melodies. The instrumentation is not quite extravagant. We have a bass-sequence, a simple and modest rhythm underneath and on top of that the melody lines, sometimes unison, sometimes in two voices. Especially a track like A Lesson To Remember brings back memories of the works by Mark Shreeve, but is less bombastic than Shreeve’s music on for example Crash Head. More modest and suitable for some meditation is the fourth track, followed by a piece with less pop influences, but a bit more as TD in the eighties. Then we hear music in the vein of Giorgio Moroder did on Neverending Story. The playing time of this CD is well over 45 minutes and to my taste the production might have been more powerful and clearer at the same time. The last track on the album is purely retro music with a delicious sequence and compared to the other tracks, it seems a bit odd musically, but nonetheless exquisite! The percussion in the second part of that last track gives a slightly shaper edge: retro with balls! It’s a very nice offering for those who favour the more poppy and softer electronic music.
