TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN & MARCO HIETALA

4 september 2002 in Tilburg. Het zou een gedenkwaardig avondje worden. Daar leek het overigens geenszins op, althans niet in positieve zin, omdat collega Leo op het laatste moment moest afhaken vanwege het feit dat hij niet voorkwam op de gastenlijst. Ook ik dreigde het slachtoffer te worden van gebrek aan ervaring en communicatie. Hoewel ik al maanden geleden de toezegging kreeg voor een interview, werden mijn e-mails de laatste weken niet beantwoord en ik stond ook nergens op een gastenlijst. Maar met wat vriendelijke woorden en wat aandringen, kwam er uiteindelijk iemand van Mojo Concerts - bedankt Jeps! - naar de zaal die me tot mijn aangename verrassing een fotopas verschafte en hij vertelde dat ik naar beneden mocht om het beloofde interview alsnog te doen! Daar trof ik zangeres Tarja Turunen die een bordje eten smakelijk weghapte. Lui op de bank lagen bassist-zanger Marco Hietala en toetsenist-componist Tuomas. Na een korte introductie kreeg ik de volgende antwoorden op mijn vragen.

Tuomas, je ziet er wat vermoeid uit. Komt dat door alle interviews of begint het toeren zijn tol te eisen?

Tuomas: "Om eerlijk te zijn: ik begin mijn thuis nu wel te missen. Hoewel ik geen gezin heb zoals Marco, verlang ik er toch erg naar om na drie maanden weer naar huis te gaan. En interviews, nee, dat hoort erbij. Ik vind het prima om met mensen te praten.

Marco: "Ja, we missen op onze eigen manier ons thuis allemaal. Ik heb een vriendin en een tweeling van een jaar. De tranen schieten ime in de ogen als ik ze door de telefoon hoor brabbelen!"

Jullie hebben ook in Zuid-Amerika getoerd en direkt erna in Europa. Hoe was het overzee en hoe bevalt het jullie hier in Nederland?

Tuomas: "Geweldig!. Het publiek hier is ook fantastisch, maar in Zuid-Amerika is het echt onvoorstelbaar! Wat een passie stralen die mensen uit, zo gedreven als zij zijn. Telkens volle of uitverkochte zalen, kortom een genot om voor te spelen. Ik moet wel zeggen, dat jullie Nederlanders een gastvrij en vriendelijk volkje zijn, hoor! Als ik uit Finland weg zou moeten, zou ik serieus overwegen om naar Nederland te verhuizen! Al met al was het een erg druk programma met veel reizen, zoals nu ook, de meeste nachten slapen in de bus, alleen op rustdagen zit er een hotelovernachting in. Afijn, nog drie concerten en dat is het voorlopig rust geblazen!"

Hoe bedoel je dat, Tuomas? Betekent dit dat jullie voorlopig geen nieuw werk zullen uitbrengen?

Tuomas: "In feite wel, ja. We zijn de afgelopen jaren dan ook wel erg productief geweest. Ruim vier studioalbums in vijf jaar uitbrengen is niet niks. Dan nog het live-werk tijdesn de vele concerten; kortom het is de hoogste tijd om een rustpauze in te lassen. Er is trouwens nog een dvd op komst van de Zuid-Amerikaanse tournee. Stil zitten doen we overigens niet. Ik ben met meerdere projecten bezig, net als Marco."

Heeft deze rustpauze ook nog iets te maken met Tarja’s klassieke zangopleiding? Blijven jullie in de komende tijd wel repeteren?

Tuomas: "We hebben tot nu toe steeds rekening gehouden met Tarja’s verplichtingen en zullen dat ook blijven doen. Meestal plannen we de tournees ook in haar vrije maanden. Tarja woont in verband met haar opleiding tegenwoordig in Duitsland en ook de andere bandleden wonen niet meer om de hoek zoals vroeger, maar op bijvoorbeeld 200 kilometer afstand. Dat betekent niet dagelijks repeteren, maar agenda’s trekken en een week repetities vastleggen. Ik denk wel dat we rond de jaarwisseling nog hier en daar zullen optreden."

Jullie hadden al heel snel platinum in Finland met Century Child. Wat betekent dat en hoe loopt de verkoop in West-Europa?

Tuomas: "Ja, in feite zitten we al bijna op dubbel platina! Voor platina heb je dertigduizend verkochte exemplaren nodig en voor dubbel platina vijfenvijftigduizend. In Finland wonen ruim vijf miljoen mensen dus... Ook hier gaat het boven verwachting goed. We zullen dus voor ons volgende album vast meer studiotijd toegemeten krijgen!"

Het is me opgevallen dat op Century Child een wat ander geluid te horen is: meer bas en Tarja Turunen die nog zoetgevooisder klinkt. Verder kom je bijna niet meer aan soleren toe. Was dat ook de opzet?

Tuomas: "Klopt. Ik wilde een meer warme, menselijke stem in plaats van de wat schellere sopraan en verder een wat heavier geluid en hier en daar ook een mannenstem. Toetsensolo’s? Op Century Child staat er niet een! Ook een bewuste keuze: prominenter gitaarwerk en ik ben tevreden zo met de rol die ik nu vervul en ik ben trots op wat ik tot nu toe bereikt heb."

Marco, hoe ben je bij Nightwish terechtgekomen?

Marco: "Enige tijd geleden zat Sinergy, de band waarin ik toen speelde, in het voorprogramma van Nightwish. Ik had toen de gelegenheid om met Tuomas en de anderen te praten en de band die toen is ontstaan, heeft er uiteindelijk toe geleid dat Tuomas mij vroeg om bij Nightwish te komen spelen."

Tuomas: "We zochten immers een andere bassist en ik wilde er een mannelijke zangstem bij en met Marco haalde ik beiden in huis, want hij deed ook vrij veel leadzang in zijn vorige bands."

Marco: "Ik heb nog even getracht het werk in beide bands te combineren maar Sinergy dwong me uiteindelijk om een keuze te maken en het is dus Nightwish geworden!

Hebben jullie na concerten nog een terugkoppeling gehad van geluidstechnici, zoals in het bloedhete Paradiso waar ik Tarja’s zang wat ondergesneeuwd vond worden door de overheersende bas?

Tuomas: "Ja, we proberen steeds voeling te houden om een zo optimaal mogelijk geluid te krijgen. Paradiso was in diverse opzichten niet helemaal perfect. Zo was de temperatuur bij ons op het podium bijna vijftig graden Celsius! Maar, we hebben hoge verwachtingen voor vanavond; het geluid zal prima zijn en we zullen er iets heel speciaals van maken!"

Met een ‘tot ziens’ en deze heerlijke belofte in de tas, haastte ik mij weer naar boven om vooral de eerste noten van After Forever niet te missen!

At first there was obviously a lack of communication between the venue of 013 in Tilburg, the Netherlands and the tour management, but thanks to people of Mojo Concerts everything worked out fine: I got my photo pass and more important, I was allowed to speak to keyboardist, composer and producer Tuomas Holopainen and bassist-singer Marco Hietala. While Charon was playing upstairs I encountered singre Tarja Turunen who was enjoying her supper and, somewhat lazy lying on a couch, Marco and Tuomas, who was looking a bit tired. After a short introduction I got the following answers to my questions.

Tuomas, you look a bit tired, is it from all the interviews you just did or is this tour taking it’s toll?

Tuomas: "Well, to be honest, I’m beginning to miss home. Allthough I don’t have a family like Marco, I still long for home after being abroad for three months. And interviews? No, that’s part of it all. I enjoy talking to people."

Marco: "Yeah, each one of us misses home. I have a girlfriend at home and a one-year old twin. I do get tears in my eyes when I hear them babbling to me!"

You just did a tour in South America and after that straight to Europe. What was it like overseas and do you like it in the Netherlands so far?

Tuomas: "Oh yeah, great. Audiences here are also fantastic but there's no match with those in South America! It is stunning how passionate the South American people are and each time the venues we played in were sold out. It’s really a privilege to play shows there! On the other hand I must admit that you Dutch people are very friendly and we are overwhelmed by your hospitality. If I wanted to move away from Finland I would seriously consider moving to the Netherlands! All and all it is has been a tight schedule and we did a lot of travelling, like just now: many nights we sleep in the coach only on our days off we can spend a night in a hotel. Anyway, three more concerts and then back to Finland and we will take a break for several months."

What do you mean, Tuomas? Does this mean no new album in the near future?

Tuomas: "That’s correct. We have been very productive these last years: over four full-length studio-albums in the last five years since we formed Nightwish isn’t exactly nothing! Add the many shows we’ve done, so I think we all earned a bit of rest. By the way there’s a DVD coming up from the South American tour and actually we won’t sit back and relax: I will be busy with several other projects just like Marco."

Does this break has anything to do with Tarja’s education in classical singing and will you still do rehearsals in the next months?

Tuomas: "We have always planned our activities around Tarja’s obligations and we will remain doing so in the future. Mostly we do our tours in her free months. Tarja lives in Germany these days, because of her classical training and other members of the band don’t live around the corner as well, like they used to but for instance some two hundred miles apart. This means we cannot rehearse daily but we have to make arrangements to do these rehearsals within a specific week or so. I think we will do one or two shows at the end of this year or maybe in the beginning of next year."

Your album Century Child sold platinum in Finland real quick. What does this mean in numbers and how does the album sell in Western Europe?

Tuomas: "In fact we almost have sold double-platinum! Platinum means thirty thousand copies, double-platinum means fifty five thousand copies. In Finland live just over five million people so... Over here the sales are above expectations as well. I guess we’ve earned ourselves more studio time for our next album!"

On Century Child the sound is somewhat different from the previous albums: more bass, an even sweeter singing Tarja and I can hardly find a keyboardsolo on the album, has this all been done with a specific purpose?

Tuomas: "Correct. I wanted a more ‘human’ vocal instead of the somewhat cool soprano, together with a more heavy sound and the addition of male vocals. Keyboard solos? There is not one keyboard solo on the entire album! Also well planned: more dominant guitar and I am completely satisfied with my role as it is now. I have my degree in playing the clarinet and I don’t think I’m that good a keyboard player to do a lot of solos. Still I’m content and proud of what I have achieved so far."

How did you get involved with Nightwish, Marco?

Marco: "Some time ago Sinergy, the band I used to play in, was support-act for Nightwish. Then I had the opportunity to talk to Tuomas and the others in deep and we kind of built up a bondage that eventually led to Tuomas asking me to join Nightwish."

Tuomas: "We were looking for a new bass player and I wanted to add male vocals. With Marco I got both my demands fulfilled: after all he did a lot of lead singing in his previous bands."

Marco: "I tried to combine playing in both bands but Sinergy eventually forced me to make a choice, obviously I chose to join Nightwish!"

Do you have any kind of feed back with your sound engineers after shows? Like in the extremely hot Paradiso, I experienced that Tarja’s voice could hardly be heard because of the dominating bass? 

Tuomas: "Yes, we try to. We always strive for the best possible well-balanced sound. Paradiso was not perfect in different ways but the temperature on stage was round the fifty degrees Celsius! But, we do have high expectations for tonight. The sound promises to be as good as perfect and we will make this a very special event!"

With this delightful promise I said goodbye and speeded up to the venue to listen to the first notes from Nightwish’ support After Forever!
