RETROSPECTIVE 3: 1989 – 2008 (NL+E)

Retrospective 3, de derde compilatie van de Canadese supergroep Rush is een feit. Ruim 71 minuten luisteren naar ‘the best of’ uit de periode 1989-2008. Op de eerste schijf staat een remix van One Little Victory en nummers als Dreamline, Presto, Roll The Bones, Animate, Driven en natuurlijk het aansprekende Far Cry. Verder hoor je nog een remix van Earthshine en een liveversie van Ghost Of A Chance. De tweede disc bestaat uit een verzameling video’s, deels van dezelfde nummers als die van de eerste disc, maar ook andere zoals Stick It Out, Half The World, Superconductor en livebeelden uit de R30-tour van The Seeker, Secret Touch en het akoestische Resist. Als extraatje zie je een meer geestig dan informatief interview met bassist-zanger Geddy Lee, gitarist Alex Lifeson en drummer Neil Peart door Stephen Colbert tijdens de Snakes & Arrows-tournee. Het was klaarblijkelijk voor het eerst in 33 jaar dat Rush op de Amerikaanse tv te zien was! Als afsluiting van het interview zie je een live-uitvoering van Tom Sawyer. De geluidskwaliteit is uitstekend evenals de beeldkwaliteit. Voor de echte fan is dit dubbelalbum geen punt van discussie; voor de gewone liefhebber die vrijwel alles van Rush al in de kast heeft staan, voegt het niet zoveel toe, maar voor mensen die weinig of niets van deze Canadezen in huis hebben is dit een absolute aanrader. Retrospective 3 is een mooie compilatie en een aardige combinatie van cd en dvd.

Rush, the Canadian powertrio from the Toronto area, celebrate their 35th anniversary with the third album in the Retrospective-series. Starting out playing an original kind of hard rock, they became much more progressive and symphonic in the eighties. Holding on to the use of keyboards, they moved back towards their original style eventually, but since the vocals of Geddy Lee had become mellower, Rush defined their definitive style with a mix of hard rock, melodic rock and progressive influences. This compilation contains an excellent choice of their best songs of the albums Presto (1989), Roll The Bones (1991), Counterparts (1993), Test For Echo (1996), Vapor Trails (2002) and Snakes & Arrows (2007). Of special interest are remixes from One Little Victory and Earthshine, as well as the live version of Ghost Of A Chance. The second disc contains videos and live performances, some of them feature the same songs as on the first disc, but also for example Stick It Out, Half The World, Show Don't Tell and Superconductor. Furthermore there are images from the R30-tour with The Seeker, Secret Touch and an acoustic version of Resist. As a bonus the disc contains a live performance of Tom Sawyer at the end of a short interview with Stephen Colbert during their Snakes & Arrows-tour. Apparently this was the first time in 33 years Rush was on the American TV, I can hardly imagine that this is true! It has a good sound quality, but unfortunately the guys were not allowed to play the whole song in its entirety. If you own all albums by Rush, I’m afraid it doesn’t add enough to consider buying unless you’re a true-blue fan. If you don't own a copy of every album, this retrospective could be an excellent choice, because Retrospective 3 is a nice collection of songs both on audio and video. Rush is a phenomenon and still one of the worlds few rock bands still together after almost forty years. Aren’t they legendary already?
