STAR TRAVELLER (1999), heruitgave (NL+E)

Net als Helios Arena is Star Traveller een heruitgave met bonustrack van het negentiende album van Indra, de Roemeense beoefenaar van elektronische muziek (EM). Dit album is duidelijk minder melodieus dan Helios Arena. Vooral in de eerste nummers hoor je vaak een enigszins monotoon ritme afgewisseld met met vrij scherp klinkende effecten, stemmetjes, slippende auto’s, enzovoort. Alleen daar waar de melodieuze muziek de overhand krijgt, herken ik opnieuw Jean Michel Jarre waardoor het luisteren een stuk aangenamer wordt. De meest aansprekende track is het lange bonusnummer dat wordt gedragen door een wat subtieler ritme en een aardige, maar vrij simpele basissequence. Het geheel klinkt best goed en er zijn ook duidelijk invloeden van Tangerine Dream hoorbaar. Mijns inziens ligt de nadruk echter te veel op space-effecten, soundscapes en ‘Houston Control’ teksten en iets te weinig op goede muziek, terwijl Indra menig album heeft opgenomen waarop hij bewijst dat hij wel degelijk prachtige EM kan maken!

Just like Helios Arena is Star Traveller a reissue with bonus tracks of the nineteenth album by Indra, the Rumanian practitioner of electronic music (EM). This album is clearly less melodic than the previous one. The first tracks in particular are somewhat monotonous, rhythms combined with sharp sounding effects, voices, skidding cars and so on. Only where tuneful material gets the upper hand we recognise the music of Jean Michel Jarre and the experience becomes more pleasant. The long bonus track is the most noticeable, carried by a subtle rhythm and a nice, but rather simple foundation sequence. On the whole, the album is reasonably good and we can hear definite influences of Tangerine Dream here. For me there's a bit too much emphasis on spacey effects and Houston Control texts and not enough attention on good music, despite the fact that there are sufficient albums where Indra proves that he really can make great EM!
