SOUND EXPLORATION (NL+E)

De Spaanse DJ Mark LP raakte rond de eeuwwisseling gefascineerd door ‘chill outmuziek'. Hij is goed thuis in de muziekwereld en met wat hulp ook goed ingewijd in diverse computerprogramma’s. Hij ging zelf aan de slag en met behulp van de programma’s Propellorheads, Reason en Syntrillium – Cool edit Pro maakte hij deze eerste commercieel beschikbare plaat als Cool Wind. Voordien bracht hij alleen mixen uit. Sound Exploration is dus pure computertechnologie, maar de veertien tracks die samen goed zijn voor bijna een uur muziek klinken desondanks zeer muzikaal. Je hoort lekkere ‘grooves’, bijna dansbare en pakkende melodietjes, heerlijke ritmiek, maar helaas af en toe ook storende stemmen: spaceachtig in Oasis In Your Mind, via de vocoder in de titeltrack en vrouwelijke zang in It’s Everlasting. Tussen de slow swingstukken door staan diverse bijna ambient passages. Een redelijk grote diversiteit aan geluiden en effecten in combinatie met de niet al te moeilijke melodielijnen en ritmes, houden de belangstelling echter goed vast. Persoonlijk houd ik meer van artiesten die zelf alle melodieën bedenken in plaats van te kiezen uit fragmenten die computers ophoesten, vandaar dat ik dit album toch wat magertjes beoordeel. Met een glasheldere productie en mooi artwork van Michel Huygen is deze plaat zeker een luisterbeurt waard voor mensen die minder moeite hebben met de wijze waarop deze muziek tot stand kwam.

At the turn of the 21st century, the Spanish DJ Mark LP became fascinated by the so-called chill out music. He already was very familiar in the world of music, and shortly afterwards he became an adept using Propellerhead, Reason and Syntrillium Cool edit Pro. So he started to make his own music and, with the use of these computer programs, he produced Sound Exploration. It is his first commercial album though he had already released several mixes. This album  was created entirely by computer technology and it provides almost one hour of entertainment. All fourteen tracks sound very musical with lovely grooves, catchy melodies, and (almost) danceable rhythms. Unfortunately - at least for me, that is - the inclusion of some rather annoying voices are detracting: a spacey one on Oasis In Your Mind, the use of a vocoder on the titletrack, and the female vocals on It's Everlasting. In between the 'slow swing pieces' there are several almost ambient sounding tracks. The fairly large diversity of sounds and effects on this CD helps to keep you interested in the rather easy melody lines and rhythms. I prefer artists who compose their melodies rather than teh ones who select sound fragments coughed up by computers, so my assessment may be a bit on the conservative side. However, the production sounds crystal clear and the CD features some beautiful artwork by Michel Huygen. So, I think that this is a nice recording and it's definitely worth listening to for those having fewer qualms about the way this sort of music was created.
