RETURNING TIDES: BEST OF DAVID WRIGHT 1991-2004 (NL+E)

Het aardige van compilatiealbums is dat ze vaak een lange speelduur hebben. Returning Tides: Best Of David Wright 1991-2004  van David Wright klokt maar liefst 79 minuten. Daarop heeft Wright achttien (!) stukken bewerkt tot 24-bit remasters. De man die destijds mede-oprichter was van de groep Code Indigo, waarmee hij vijf albums opnam, heeft inmiddels al een indrukwekkend aantal soloalbums achter zijn naam staan. Zijn melodieuze en zeer toegankelijke ritmische muziek die goed in het gehoor ligt, zal menig liefhebber aanspreken. De hier gepresenteerde cd is een bloemlezing uit de albums die hij heeft opgenomen tussen 1991 en 2004. In Sioux Falls met synthesizers die klinken als Indiaanse fluiten, is de invloed van volksmuziek evident, maar in een aantal andere stukken, zoals Midas, Marilynmba en de titeltrack klinkt het me allemaal net iets te gemakkelijk en te nietszeggend. Meer aansprekend zijn de als gitaren klinkende synthesizers in Rysheara en in het gedragenTaiga. Het atmosferische Smiling Shadows Lie is een nummer met een hoofdrol voor een nagenoeg als saxofoon klinkende synth, terwijl Beijing uiteraard is gestoeld op de Chinese muziekcultuur. Ritmiek, etnische invloeden en zang overheersen in Guardians terwijl gitarist Andy Lobben het slepende No More Angels een extra dimensie meegeeft. De piano bepaalt de sfeer in het rustige Walking With Ghosts en de stem van Hatem Karmel geeft het orkestrale Shah een oosters tintje mee. Mooie, bijna symfonische muziek is te horen in Beyond Paradise, To Touch The Sky, Flame Sky” - met gitaar en viool - en in Sygyzy - met gitaar en zang - terwijl piano, ritmiek en koorachtige klanken de dienst uitmaken in Continuum. Dit verzamelalbum is een prima kennismaking met David Wright en vooral een aanrader voor hen die zijn muziek (nog) niet kennen.

This very long compilation album with a playing time of 79 minutes, features eighteen 24-bit remasters originally published on David Wright's nine most recent albums recorded between 1991 and 2004. This very dyed-in-the-wool electronic musician (EM), and in those days co-founder of Code Indigo with whom he recorded five albums, has published a rich collection of recordings containing music that is melodious, often rhythmic, and very appealing to the ear. The CD contains perceptible, folkloristic influences, for example, synths that sound like Indian flutes in Sioux Falls, but it also has a few popular, and to me a bit less appealing and slightly simple, sing songs like MIdas, Marilynmba and Returning Tides, which are enclosed by little treasures like Rysheara with guitar sounding like synths, or the lingering Taiga. On the atmospherical track Smiling Shadows Lie Wright plays a lead synth that almost sounds like a sax. Beijing, naturally, is based on part of the Chinese music culture. Rhythms, ethnical influences and vocals dominate Guardians, while Andy Lobben provides an extra dimension with his guitar to the dragging number No More Angels. The piano characterizes the quiet Walking With Ghosts and Hatem Karmel's voice gives the orchestral Shah an Eastern tinge. Beautiful and almost symphonic music can be heard in Beyond Paradise, To Touch The Sky, Flame Sky (with guitar and violin) and Syzygy (with guitar and vocals), while a piano, rhythms and choir-like sounds dominate Continuum.  This compilation is a first class introduction to David Wright and should be of special interest to those who are not (yet) familiar with his music.
