RED SKY, BLUE GUITARS (NL+E)

Erik Wollo is al professioneel muzikant sinds 1980. Hij verdiende reeds lang zijn sporen in diverse muziekstijlen, waaronder klassiek, jazz en elektronische muziek (EM). Hij speelde met bands en ensembles en schreef muziek voor theater, ballet, orkest en uiteraard voor zijn eigen muziek. Red Sky, Blue Guitars opent atmosferisch gevolgd door de eerste klanken op zijn welbekende akoestische gitaar. Daarnaast bespeelt hij onder meer bas, mandoline en E-bow. Met behulp van moderne elektronica kan Wøllo zijn gitaarklanken ondersteunen met synthesizers en subtiele percussie. De muziek klinkt zeer toegankelijk, je hoort nergens dreunende ritmes of storende computerstemmen, maar slechts mooie, rustige bijna new age muziek met geregeld een brug naar general melodic, zoals in Sedona. Red Guitars neigt naar klassiek. Dit nummer had ook op een van de klassieke albums van Steve Hackett kunnen staan. Omdat EM door de meeste liefhebbers wordt beschouwd als 'muziek met synthesizers', valt Eriks muziek met de nadruk op de akoestische gitaar - luister maar eens naar Silent Nostalgia - eigenlijk een beetje buiten het genre. Toch vind ik dat dit album, gezien de raakvlakken met genoemde genres, zeker een bespreking verdient. Deze composities zijn nog puur natuur, origineel en doordacht gecomponeerd zonder daarvoor de computer het werk te laten doen. De aansprekende lieflijke arrangementen met VST-instrumenten zorgen voor een nieuwe dimensie binnen het brede scala van de EM. Een absolute aanrader voor liefhebbers van rustige, akoestische gitaarmuziek.

Erik Wollo is a professional musician since 1980. For a long time he has won his spurs in various musical genres, including classical music, jazz and electronic music (EM). He played with bands and ensembles and composed music for the theatre, ballet, orchestra and naturally his own EM. After a very atmospherical opening of the album Red Sky, Blue Guitars, the first sounds of his well-known acoustic guitar follow. Over and above that he plays, among others, bass guitar, mandolin and E-bow. By using modern electronics Erik can support his guitar sounds with synthesizers and subtle percussion. The music is very accessible, there are no droning rhythms and no annoying computer voices. This music is merely beautiful and quiet, almost new age music with a cross-reference to the general melodic genre regularly, like on Sedona. Leaning towards classical music for instance is Red Guitars, a track that could have been found on one of the classical albums by Steve Hackett. Because most EM-fans regard EM as music made by synthesizers, Erik's music, with its emphasis on the acoustic guitar. Silent Nostalgia falls between two stools a bit. Still, because of the many similarities to the genres mentioned, I think this release certainly deserves a review. These compositions are pure and natural, composed with originality and well-thought out, not letting the computer do the work. The appealing lovely orchestrations with their VST-instruments give the large scale of EM a whole new dimension. Highly recommended for lovers of quiet acoustic guitar music.
