PAST AND FUTURE SOUNDS 1996-2006 (NL+E), compilatie

Eloy Fritsch, de Braziliaanse toetsenist van Apocalypse en docent elektronische en computermuziek aan de universiteit van Rio Grande Do Sul, leverde onlangs zijn zevende soloalbum Landscapes af. Omdat het tien jaar geleden is dat hij zijn eerste soloalbum Dreams uitbracht, leek het Musea Records een goed idee om een zeventig minuten lange compilatie uit te brengen. Het mooiste van dit fraaie overzicht zit in het laatste deel van Past And Future Sounds 1996-2006 dat vier niet eerder uitgebrachte nummers bevat, goed voor een kleine twintig minuten naast de twaalf stukken van eerdere albums. Fritsch heeft, weliswaar beïnvloed door mensen als Vangelis, Larry Fast (Synergy) en Rick Wakeman toch langzamerhand een eigen stijl ontwikkeld, waarin zo nu en dan ook Zuid-Amerikaanse invloeden te herkennen zijn, naast invloeden uit de klassieke muziek en van zijn grote voorbeelden. Deze combinatie bevat een grote muzikale variatie, soms met de nadruk op klassiek, dan weer meer op de kosmische toer, maar steeds met mooie melodieën en het gebruik van een fors arsenaal aan toetseninstrumenten,   waaruit Fritsch een indrukwekkende hoeveelheid aan klanken tovert. Van de nieuwe nummers is Frontiers een kort, bombastisch en enigszins klassiek aandoend stukje, gedomineerd door Fritsch’ typische synthesizergeluid. Heaven is een lieflijk stukje pianomuziek met op de achtergrond lichte orkestraties, die gaandeweg wat nadrukkelijker aanwezig zijn. In Savage hoor je eerst de meer atmosferische kant van zijn muziek, gevolgd door de naar klassiek neigende kant. Opnieuw toont hij hiermee zijn grote compositorische kwaliteiten. The Garden Of Emotions Suite is het vrij lange en qua speelstijl sterk wisselende stuk voorzien van onder meer samples van koorstemmen. Hier zijn de invloeden van onder anderen Synergy en Wakeman goed hoorbaar. De ‘zang’ geeft echter een duidelijke eigen draai aan deze weldoordachte muziek. Een uitstekende compilatie ook interessant voor hen die alles van Fritsch al in de kast hebben staan!

The Brazilian keyboard player Eloy Fritsch is not merely a keyboard player; he's also a lecturer of electronic and computer music at the university of Rio Grando Do Sul and the keyboardist of Apocalypse. Recently he released his seventh solo album Landscapes. In 1996 he released his first solo album Dreams and it seemed a good idea to Musea Records to bring out a seventy minute long compilation in 2006. The best part of this excellent overview comes at the end where four previously unreleased tracks with a tota playtime of about twenty minutes follow twelve pieces from earlier albums. Fritsch is undeniably influenced by people like Vangelis, Larry Fast (Synergy) and Rick Wakeman, but he has gradually developed his own style wherein South American influences can be heard alongside classical music and his various idols. This combination allows for considerable variation in the music, sometimes with the emphasis on classical, or then more cosmic, but always with pleasant melodies and the use of an extensive arsenal of keyboards out of which Fritsch conjures an impressive quantity of sounds. Of the new numbers Frontiers is a short bombastic piece with a classical slant, dominated by Fritsch’s typical synthesizer sound. Heaven is sweetly-played piano music with a light orchestral backing that swells as the piece progresses. In Savage Fritsch firstly explores the atmospheric side and then moves into classical mode showing his great compositional qualities. The closing number is quite long and very varied in styles. The Garden Of Emotions Suite includes samples of choral voices, and Synergy and Wakeman amongst others can be heard here. The ‘singing’ gives a definitely unique character to this well-constructed music. Past And Future Sounds 1996-2006 is an excellent compilation that is also of interest for those who already have everything from Fritsch in their collection.
