MISSION TO SEDNA (NL+E)

Het Canadese duo Felix Richer en Max Chapados maakt sinds 1997 muziek onder de naam Nuclear Ramjet. Mission To Sedna  is het derde album en het belangrijkste publiek van het duo is de dansende jeugd. De dynamische, goed geproduceerde uptempo muziek, is een combinatie van techno en synthipop uit de jaren tachtig. De zogeheten discodreun wordt veelvuldig gehanteerd, maar daarnaast gebruikt men ook vocoders, synths, percussie en gitaren om toch vooral de muziek gevarieerd en afwisselend te houden. Uiteraard zijn stemmetjes die in de ruimtevaart thuishoren volop aanwezig. De melodie en de variatie zijn in het lange eerste en in het laatste nummer nog behoorlijk aanwezig met normale percussie in plaats van een dansdreun. Die elementen ontbreken echter in de overige tracks. Alleen in het tweede deel van Minas Tirith lijkt het weer even wat melodieuzer te worden. Cloud Sailors vind ik een techno remix van een instrumentaal Human League-achtig nummer. De overige tracks bestaan grotendeels uit verzamelingen drum ‘n’ bass-muziek op een dansbare opzwepende beat, met wat uitstapjes met synths - meestal achtergrondakkoorden - en af en toe een gitaar. Enige gelijkenis met de meest monotone en dansbare muziek van Kraftwerk is zeer wel mogelijk. Voor de meeste liefhebbers van melodieuze elektronische muziek, waartoe ik mijzelf ook reken, is dit album een brug te ver. De jongeren onder ons zullen er, denk ik, anders over denken!

The Canadian duo Felix Richer and Max Chapados have been working together since 1997. Mission To Sedna is their third album aimed at the youthful dance audience. Their dynamic, well-produced and up-tempo music is a combination of techno and eighties synth-pop. The clichéd disco-backing is used extensively, but the addition of vocoders, synths, percussion and guitars keeps things varied and fresh. As can be expected, assorted NASA ‘space exploration’ voices turn up frequently in the mix. There is plenty of melody and variation in the lengthy first and last track, notably standard percussion instead of machine-generated beats, however, this quality is lacking in the rest of the tracks. Only the second part of Minas Tirith gets a bit more melodic. Cloud Sailors feels like a techno remix of an instrumental track by The Human League. The remaining tracks consist mostly of assorted drum ‘n’ bass music over a lively danceable beat with occasional blasts of synth - mostly background chords-  and an occasional guitar. There is a very strong resemblance to the more monotonous dance music made by Kraftwerk. For most fans of melodic electronic music this album is one step too far, but youngsters may think differently!
