MIDNIGHT TALES (NL+E)

Midnight Tales is een 'nieuw' album van Salva Moreno, de sympathieke Spaanse beoefenaar van elektronische muziek die zijn albums uitbrengt onder de naam Psicodreamics. Hoewel nieuw? Het betreft weliswaar onuitgebracht materiaal, maar de composities, arrangementen en opnamen dateren uit 1995. In feite behoren de stukken op deze cd-r dus tot de eerste die Salva componeerde. Vorig jaar begon hij de ‘vergeten’ muziek te remasteren, zodat anno 2008 de kwaliteit ruim voldoende is voor de huidige maatstaven, zij het iets minder sprankelend dan op zijn recentere albums. De opening is stijlvol en gedragen, uitgevoerd door onder meer ‘strijkers’, terwijl hetzelfde thema in het tweede nummer vol echo’s wordt overgenomen door synths met een ander geluid. Het ritme in The Waiting is subtiel, de melodieën refereren aan synthipop uit de jaren tachtig van bands als Visage en Depeche Mode. Datzelfde geldt ook voor Midnight Crossing. A Tale For The Rain is een filmische track met eerst piano op de voorgrond en later ook een klavecimbelachtig geluid en een 'dwarsfluit’. Op het folkloristisch getinte Moonlight Dance kun je zwieren in walstempo. My Beloved Shadow is een langzaam stuk met trage melodielijnen en tal van donkere effecten, waardoor er een wat duister sfeertje ontstaat. Childhood Land zou een vervolg op de eerste track kunnen zijn: orkestraal, maar toch lichtvoetig. Het walsje komt terug in het statige door orgel en later sprankelende synths gedomineerde Sea Dreams. Bitter Flight Of Cherub had een rustig, instrumentaal nummer van The Human League kunnen zijn. In It Remembers Me Scotland klinkt een bekende melodie die wordt uitgebouwd en die aan het eind een Schots tintje krijgt. Ondanks het onderliggende ritme klinkt The Promise zweverig en neigt tegelijkertijd naar pop. Het uur wordt volgemaakt met het lange La Passion De Azhrarn, het meest volwassen stuk op Midnight Tales. De diverse tempowisselingen en het gebruik van verschillende instrumentaties houden de luisteraar gevangen in een web van synthipop en soms zelfs in een bombastische soundtrack van een film. De basismelodie lijkt wat op I Like Chopin van Giorgio Moroder.

Prima dat Salva Moreno dit wat oudere, op dromen en fantasieën gebaseerde werk heeft uitgebracht, want het is beslist een uitstekende aanvulling op ’s mans oeuvre.
Hopelijk verschijnt er in 2009 een ‘echt’ nieuw album!

Midnight Tales is a new release by the sympathetic Spanish electronic musician Salva Moreno under the moniker Psicodreamics. Although new? No, actually not quite, because these recordings never saw the light of day when composed around 1995. The basis of this album is dating from the mid-nineties and all the arrangements belong to the earliest works of Moreno. Last year he started to work on this ‘forgotten music’, so even in 2008 the sound quality is above average compared to the current standards due to his efforts, though the sound is somewhat less sparkling than on his later albums. The opening is full of style and grandeur with a main role for the synth-strings; the same theme is taken over by different sounding synths with lots of echoing sounds going round. The rhythm in The Waiting is subtle, the melodies refer to the synthi-pop from the eighties from bands like Visage and Depeche Mode, just as Midnight Crossing. A Tale For The Rain sounds more like a soundtrack with at first the piano in the fore and later on a more harpsichord-like sound and a flute-sample. You hear a nicely swaying waltz tempo in the folkloristic track Moonlight Dance. Next one is My Beloved Shadow, a slow piece with moody melody lines and numerous dark effects creating an atmosphere of gloominess. Childhood Land could have been a sequel to part two of the first track: orchestral but gentle and uplifting. The waltz returns in Sea Dreams, at first guided by a majestic organ, later interpreted through a sparkling synth-sound. Bitter Flight Of Cherub could have been a low-tempo instrumental by The Human League. In It Remembers Me Scotland, a familiar sounding melody is built up to a nice finale with a Scottish accent. In spite of the underlying smooth rhythm patterns, The Promise sounds both poppy and spacey. At the end of this album that has a playing time of more than an hour, you'll find the longest track La Passion De Azhrarn, in my opinion the most ‘mature’ piece of music. Different tempi and a diverse instrumentation keep the listener caught in a web of synthi-pop. The melody resembles the one in I Like Chopin by Georgio Moroder and some unknown bombastic film score.

It was an excellent idea by Moreno to release this somewhat older work, inspired by dreams and fantasies, because it definitely has its place in the repertoire of Psicodreamics! Hopefully in 2009 we wel celebrate a real new album!
