LOUNGE CONTROL (NL+E)

Peter Mergener (ex-Software) nam meer dan tien studioalbums op als soloartiest. Hij is al zo’n twintig jaar actief op het gebied van de elektronische muziek (EM). In een klein uur muziek verdeeld over acht stukken neemt Mergener je op Lounge Control mee op een muzikale reis, die geïnspireerd is op elementen uit de loungemuziek. Het album ligt erg goed in het gehoor; het klinkt bijna té gemakkelijk. De melodielijnen en sequences zijn niet ingewikkeld, het ritme is vaak vrij strak, maar mist daardoor spanning en variatie en dat is feitelijk mijn enige punt van kritiek op dit album. Niet voor niets staat op het hoesje ‘file under lounge/ambient’, dus verwacht geen gedurfde experimenten. Anderzijds vind ik de consistentie van dit album en het ontbreken van momenten van ergernis, zoals irritante stemgeluiden of plotselinge stijl- of sfeerwisselingen, het grote pluspunt van Lounge Control. De sprankelende muziek is zo nu en dan bijna dansbaar zoals in Orient Express Lounge, maar net als je je afvraagt of Mergener te vaak naar Enigma heeft geluisterd, komt er weer een fabelachtig mooi en atmosferisch tussenstuk voorbij. Af en toe doen fragmenten mij ook denken aan het betere werk van Yellow Magic Orchestra. Deze doorgewinterde rot in het vak hoef je over de productie van een album niets meer te vertellen, dus ook daarover niets dan lof. Misschien is deze cd op routine gemaakt zonder originele hoogstandjes, maar desalniettemin vind ik het zeer smakelijke kost!

Peter Mergener (ex-Software) recorded over ten studio albums as a solo artist and he is active about twenty years in the world of electronic music (EM). Mergener takes the listener on a musical journey on Lounge Control, based on elements from the world of lounge music. The album contains eight tracks just short of an hour in length. The entire album is extremely catchy, almost too ‘smooth’, as it were. The tunes and sequences are not too complicated and the beat is pretty tight without any real exciting variation. This is in fact my only criticism on this album. It says ‘file under lounge/ambient’ on the cover, so don’t expect any revolutionary experiments. On the other hand, the consistency of this album and its lack of annoying passages like, for instance, irritating vocal parts or sudden changes in style or mood, are in my opinion, the major assets of this musician. From time to time, the sparkling music becomes almost danceable as in Orient Express Lounge, but just when you start wondering whether Mergener hasn’t been listening to Enigma a trifle too much, he comes up with an incredibly beautiful atmospherical intermezzo. Every now and then, there is a part that reminds me of the best days of The Yellow Magic Orchestra as well. As far as the production is concerned, there’s nothing much this seasoned artist doesn’t know, so nothing but praise in this domain as well. This album may have been made in a routine way without any unique highlights; nevertheless it's much to my liking!
