LIVE IN TOKYO (NL+E)

Constance Demby is geen onbekende op het gebied van de elektronische muziek (EM). Zij heeft al veel werken op haar naam staan, de meeste in het kosmisch of meditatief subgenre. Noch haar website, noch het cd-hoesje van Live In Tokyo geven uitsluitsel over de gebruikte apparatuur en eventuele gastmusici, zodat het enigszins gissen blijft waar alle geluiden vandaan komen. Demby combineert mooie, rustige soundscapes met trage, warme melodielijnen die zijn doorspekt met oriëntaalse invloeden. De gebruikte samples klinken als oosterse snaarinstrumenten, zoals op Sky Blossoms. Het galmende en kosmische Deeper Than is zeer kenmerkend voor haar stijl. In The Winding Path en Mother Of The World  komt de piano als soloinstrument naar voren en lijkt de muziek enigszins op die van Suzanne Ciani, terwijl het er in het laatstgenoemde nummer toch veel op lijkt dat er een zangeres aanwezig is. De oosterse sferen komen weer terug in het nummer Tree Of Life. Óf er zijn gastmusici aanwezig óf het zijn bijzonder overtuigende samples van snaarinstrumenten en wederom een niet nader genoemde zangeres! Mijn favoriete nummer Dragon's Eye klinkt wat orkestraler en bombastischer en wordt begeleid door zware bassynthnoten. Het concert wordt afgesloten met Threshold, een lieflijk en zweverig stuk muziek. Live In Tokyo is een rustig en mooi, maar allerminst spetterend of ritmisch album. Het is geschikt om bij weg te dromen, bij te mediteren of als achtergrondmuziek, hoewel ik het gebodene als achtergrondmuziek eigenlijk te goed vind!

Constance Demby is not unknown as far as electronic music (EM) is concerned. She has recorded many albums, most of which are filed under cosmic or meditation music. Neither her website nor the CD-booklet provides information about the equipment she used or about her guest musicians, so the sources of her sounds remain a mystery. Demby reveals a mix of very beautiful and quiet soundscapes that contain pleasant melodies and considerable doses of oriental influences. For example, Sky Bossoms features samples that sound like oriental stringed instruments. The echoing and cosmic Deeper Than is a very good example of her musical style. In The Winding Path and Mother Of The World, the piano comes to the fore, sounding similar to Suzanne Ciani's style. In the latter song it seems that a female singer at work. The oriental influences make their return in Tree Of Life that either features guest musicians or very realistic and convincing samples of string instruments and an 'unknown' singer! My favourite piece is the rather orchestral and bombastic sounding Dragon's Eye with its accompaniment of heavy bass synth notes. The concert ends with a gentle and atmospheric piece entitled Threshold. Live In Tokyo is a quiet and beautiful album, but also pulsating and rhythmic. It's very suitable for meditation or for background music, although I think it's to good for the latter.
