LEGEND OF THE SHADOWKING (NL+E)

Het Duitse Freedom Call is al vier keer eerder in iO Pages besproken, het laatste album Dimensions (2007) stond in iO73. Maar liefst veertien composities, goed voor een krap uurtje muziek, prijken op dit zevende album van het kwartet dat naast de kernleden en componist Chris Bay (zang, gitaar) en Dan Zimmermann (drums) bestaat uit Lars Rettkowitz (gitaar) en Samy Saemann (bas). Daarnaast zijn er enkele bescheiden bijdragen van gastmusici voor zang en viool. De muziek van de band, waarvoor de basis al in 1988 werd gelegd, is in de loop der tijd steeds pakkender en gepolijster geworden en ook beter geproduceerd. Origineel is het allemaal niet, maar het klinkt geweldig als je van bombastische, melodieuze metal houdt. De koortjes die veelvuldig op dit album voorkomen, worden verzorgd door de band zelf, terwijl Chris Bay ook alle toetsen, effecten en orkestraties voor zijn rekening neemt. De muziek zweeft tussen AOR en melodieuze metal, waarbij je kunt denken aan bands als Rhapsody en vooral HammerFall. Soms zijn er ook elementen van Uriah Heep en Rainbow te horen. Geen wonder dus dat de band in mei 2010 met Axel Rudi Pell toerde, die qua genre dezelfde doelgroep bedient. Het meest progressief getinte nummer is Dark Obsession met een mooi orkestraal begin. Bay gebruikt zijn doorgaans heldere en prettig in het gehoor liggende stem in diverse intonaties. De composities zijn gevarieerd met tempowisselingen die de doorsnee couplet-refrein-couplet volgorde doorbreken en daardoor de spanning goed weten vast te houden. Een deel van de teksten is gebaseerd op de vroegtijdig aan zijn einde gekomen wereldvreemde Beierse koning Ludwig II, die onder meer verantwoordelijk was voor de bouw van het kasteel Neuschwanstein. De nummers opgedragen aan Ludwig II staan aan het eind van de cd en dat zijn tevens de beste stukken van dit album. Die beginnen met een heerlijke prelude met zware orkestraties en een goed verstaanbare stem die in het Duits een gedicht voordraagt. De ballad bevindt zich ook in dit laatste deel en heet Merlin - Requiem met aardig pianospel en een subtiele begeleiding door het 'orkest', terwijl Kingdom Of Madness een ode aan Iron Maiden lijkt te zijn. De plaats sluit af met de rechttoe-rechtaan rocker A Perfect Day. Een alleraardigst album met uitstekende arrangementen en wat mij betreft het beste van Freedom Call tot nu toe.

Freedom Call is a German melodic metal band hailing led by guitarist, lead vocalist and composer Chris Bay and drummer-composer Dan Zimmermann. In the current line-up are also Samy Saemann (bass) and Lars Rettkowiz (guitar). The band plays a mixture of prog metal, melodic metal, speed metal and hard rock. Legend Of The Shadowking is the seventh album by these sympathetic Germans who joined 'brothers in arms' Axel Rudi Pell in their tour through Germany. All vocal choirs were done by the band, all keyboards by Chris Bay. The band had a little help from guest musicians on violin and classical vocal on this album. The lyrics have been inspired by the life and death of Ludwig II, king of Bavaria, who lived from 1845-1886. Ludwig was known for his devotion to Robert Wagner and his music and the castles he built in southern Germany leading the state of Bavaria to bankruptcy. Many of you will know the most famous castle by name: Neuschwanstein! The album contains fourteen compositions, most of them within the time frame of five minutes. Plenty of catchy choruses and sing-along yells: this music cannot be called highly original. On the other hand these guys are experienced musicians as the foundation for Freedom Call was made as early as 1988. Bay's clear voice is a pleasant one and he is getting better and better as the years go by. His vocals have more than enough variation and all the arrangements and subtle changes in atmosphere and tempo make sure the listener stays focused. The production side of the album is one of the stronger points, attention for details another. Musically, tracks like Kingdom Of Madness shows some references to Magnum, while for example Tears Of Babylon could have been a melodic track by Hammerfall. Furthermore the bombastic side, the orchestral arrangements and the magnificent choruses in tracks like Merlin - Legend Of The Past remind me of bands like Rhapsody. The double bass drums pound - but rather subtle in the mix! - in the opening track Out Of The Ruins, Resurrection Day and Remember. Bay even makes a good attempt to sound like Jorn Lande in parts of The Darkness. With the references mentioned above I have to add bands like Rainbow, Uriah Heep and Iron Maiden. The band plays music in a genre on the far end of progressive rock, close to metal. Taht's probably the reason why I couldn't find any review on Freedom Call before. Still in my opinion bands like these should have some attention. Check out the website of the band with a lot of information and samples! Highly recommended for fans of bands like Rhapsody, Vision Divine, At Vance, Mob Rules and all the aforementioned bands.
