LANDSCAPES (NL+E)

Landscapes is het zevende soloalbum van de Braziliaanse toetsentovenaar Eloy Fritsch. Het album bevat prachtige melodieën, waarin je klassieke invloeden zult herkennen. Landscapes zal vooral liefhebbers van de ‘symfonische’ Rick Wakeman en Vangelis aanspreken. Luister maar eens naar Somewhere In Time. Fritsch’ rijke arsenaal aan toetsen staat garant voor verzorgde sequences, bescheiden gebruik van elektronisch slagwerk en een grote variëteit aan toetsengeluiden, waarbij hij de bombast niet schuwt. Zijn vorige cd Atmosphere was wat rustiger, maar bij beluistering van dit album zal de luisteraar beslist niet in slaap vallen. Cartoon valt door de gameboyachtige melodietjes lichtelijk uit de toon, maar dat nummer is waarschijnlijk als grap bedoeld. De overige tracks balanceren op het grensgebied van symfonische rock en elektronische muziek (EM). In dat gebied manoeuvreert Fritsch je vingervlug door de tien andere landschappen die hij naar mijn smaak fantastisch en kleurrijk verklankt. De illustraties van Alexandre Bandeira hebben veel weg van die van Roger Dean en ook dat is niet verkeerd. Landscapes is een uitstekend album van een begaafd toetsenist annex docent elektronische muziek aan de universiteit in Porto Alegre.

Landscapes is the seventh solo album of the Brazilian keyboardist Eloy Fritsch. The classically influenced melodies are beautiful and offer much to fans of the symphonic side of Rick Wakeman and certainly Vangelis in Somewhere In Time. Fritsch’s rich arsenal of keyboards permits well thought-out sequences, a modest use of electronic percussion and above all a great variety in keyboards with an occasional bombastic moment. Whereas his last album Atmosphere was a bit calmer, this one will certainly not allow the listener to fall asleep. The track Cartoon with its 'Game Boy-ish' melodies is the odd one out, but is probably meant as a joke. The other tracks balance on the borderlands of symphonic rock and electronic music (EM). Fritsch’s nimble hands manoeuvre us through ten landscapes, portrayed wonderfully and colourfully. The illustrations by Alexandre Bandeira look like those made by Roger Dean, which is always a good thing. Landscapes is an excellent album recorded by a gifted keyboardist and teacher of electronic music at the University of Porto Alegre.
