FANTASYNTH (NL+E)

Fantasynth is een nieuw album van Psicodreamics met geheel nieuw materiaal. Dertien tracks, goed voor zo'n 66 minuten melodieuze elektronische muziek van de bovenste plank. Hoewel de muziek wat gelijkenissen vertoont met bekende acts als Peru, Wavestar en soms een beetje Jean Michel Jarre, heeft Salva Moreno toch duidelijk een eigen stijl ontwikkeld met eigen geluiden, effecten en eigenaardigheden. Het album bevat veel variatie met een vleugje Latin, vloeiende melodieën en een herkenbare structuur; ruim voldoende spanning dus om interessant te blijven. Tijdens de langzame opening waan je je in de bossen, waarbij de zachte pianoklanken vergezeld gaan van percussie met een Zuid-Amerikaans tintje. Het tempo gaat omhoog en klokkenspel plus cello vormen de basis voor het volgende nummer dat met lichte orkestraties een vrolijk deuntje laat horen, waarbij de synth bijna als een doedelzak klinkt. Het nummer eindigt met accordeonklanken. Donkere bastonen en een prettige melodie doen denken aan de synthipop uit de jaren tachtig zoals die bijvoorbeeld werd gemaakt door Giorgio Moroder. Erotronic is duidelijk geïnspireerd op de synthipop van bijvoorbeeld Depeche Mode, maar Moreno gebruikt andere klanken en giet er een zuidelijk sausje over. In Mythos verzorgt een saxofoonsample de ‘zanglijn’ en laat het aanstekelijke zachte ritme je lekker wegdromen. Samples van jengelende kinderstemmen vormen de grappige hoofdmoot van I Like Chopin, wederom een Moroderachtig nummer. De piano klinkt zwoel over de orkestratie en je hoort een ’shuffelend’ ritme en soms in de verte een kerkorgel. Een prachtig, meeslepend bijna-popnummer met veel strings wordt gevolgd door een symfonisch stukje met orgel, waarna de muziek weer vergelijkbaar is met bijvoorbeeld Future World Orchestra en Peru. Datzelfde geldt voor Palace Of Sensuality. De melodielijn van de synth klinkt als een combinatie van orgel, strings en fluit. Zweverige fluit- en hobotonen kabbelen op een achtergrond van onder meer klokkenspel en ‘orkest’, waarna het album wordt afgesloten met Unicorn’s Dream (The End), dat vergelijkbaar is met de dromerige opening. Fantasynth bevat een puike verzameling mooie, gevoelige instrumentale nummers van een man die de status van amateur al lang is ontgroeid!

Psicodreamics the artist name of the Spanish electronic musician Salva Moreno. For over a decade he is making melodic electronic music (EM) inspired by the synthi-pop from the eighties, but he is definitely defining his own style on his new album Fantasynth. It contains a mixture of ambient, chill out, new age, symphonic and ethnic music. Thirteen brand new tracks are the follow-up to his last album A Midnight Tale, a collection of unreleased music from the early days of his career as an EM-artist. A dreamy opening can be heard in Unicorn's Dream, soft piano sounds and percussion in a South-American rhythm leave us wandering in an enchanted forest. Sleepy Sorrow is a more up-tempo track and basic sounds are provided by glockenspiel and a cello sample. Tasteful orchestrations accompany a cheerful melody played by a synth almost sounding like a bagpipe and at the end we hear some accordion. Dark and deep bass tones in Spellbound and a very nice melody bringing back memories of that delightful era of synthi-pop in the eighties. Next track Erotronic is without a doubt inspired by the aforementioned synthi-pop bands like Depeche Mode, Visage or maybe even Space. However, Moreno uses different sounds, more effects and more modern production techniques as well as most original percussion sounds, but also adding a southern flavour to it. In Mythos the main melody line is played by a saxophone sample. The catchy soft rhythm pattern let you drift away, while having most pleasant dreams. An oriental atmosphere is created in Orient Spirit as you could have expected from the title, but the funny leads are performed by samples of nagging, almost weeping children’s voices. As in the following track Forbidden Pleasures the music reminds me of I LIke Chopin by Georgio Moroder. Sweet and mellow are the piano sounds on a floating carpet of orchestrations and a delightful shuffling rhythm. Some distant church organ sounds can be distinguished. La Rosa is a very nice ‘new age meet pop’ track with a lot of strings. It is followed by a symphonic piece called Imaginarium with organ and the style here is comparable to Dutch acts like the Future World Orchestra or Peru. In Synthetic Fantasy the same genre but the tranquility of Wavestar and resemblances with some effects of Jean MIchel Jarre can be recognized. In Palace Of Sensuality the main melody is played on a synthesizer having the strange sound of a combination of woodwind, organ and strings. In A Winter Tale there are floating sounds of flute and oboe and/or clarinet, in the background amongst others the orchestral sounds and a glockenspiel. The albums ends as dreamy as it began, with Unicorn’s Dream, The End. Fantasynth is an extremely nice collection of sensual, melodic instrumental music from an artist who can no longer be considered to be an amateur. His approach to modern EM, the quality and originality of his production skills make him a professional overall. All tracks show structure, variation and have a certain tension that keeps the listener in the spell of his fantasies put to music. As usual, Moreno has enriched his CD-R’s with MP3-files.
