THE DRAMATIC AND FANTASTIC STORIES OF EDGAR ALLEN POE (NL+E)

Stephan Kaske oftewel Mythos, de doorgewinterde beoefenaar van elektronische muziek (EM), heeft door de jaren heen steeds interessante muziek uitgebracht. Hij begon in 1969 als toetsenist van de symfonische rockband Mythos, waarmee hij goed thuis  geraakte in de verschillende stijlen van EM. In de loop der jaren werkte hij zich op tot een van de meest veelzijdige elektronische musici. In zijn eigen studio produceerde hij zo’n vijftien albums. Nu, na een pauze van enkele jaren, komt Kaske overtuigend terug met de dubbel-cd The Dramatic And Fantastic Stories Of Edgar Allen Poe, gewijd aan werken en leven van de befaamde Engels-Amerikaanse schrijver Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849). Kaske raakte zeer geïntrigeerd door de schrijfsels van weeskind Poe, die in zijn korte leven veel dieptepunten meemaakte Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat dit ook tot uiting kwam in zijn mysterieuze, sombere en soms huiveringwekkende verhalen. Kaske sloot zichzelf anderhalf jaar op in zijn studio in Berlijn om vervolgens met - over het geheel genomen - bijzonder originele melodieuze stukken muziek op de proppen te komen. De eerste cd bevat acht stukken in lengte variërend van ruim vier tot ruim tien minuten. Hij gebruikt daarbij tal van aparte samples, zoals fluittonen, donkere blazers en vocoderachtige geluiden om de dramatiek in de verhalen van Poe tot uitdrukking te brengen. Vooral The Island Of The Fay is een juweeltje met subtiele sequences en atmosferische melodielijnen die aan Tangerine Dream van de jaren tachtig doen denken. Ook de tweede cd is naar mijn mening bijzonder sterk. Ook hierop staan acht stukken met wederom verbluffende staaltjes van compositorisch vermogen met een breed scala aan zowel herkenbare als relatief nieuwe geluiden: stemmetjes, koortjes en gitaarachtige geluiden, waarbij ook de tempowisselingen binnen het nummer The Power Of Words steeds voor verrassingen zorgen en de aandacht van de luisteraar constant vasthouden. The Stylus is klassiek georiënteerd met tal van strings. Never Bet The Devil Your Head is bombastisch met een rijke variatie aan percussie met soms wat oosterse invloeden, maar meestal gewoon lekker meeslepende muziek die vooral goed in het gehoor ligt. Het enigszins op Vangelis gelijkende slotstuk E.A.P Forever is een fraai eind van een indrukwekkend melodies en ritmisch dubbelalbum.

The electronic music (EM) performer Stephan Kaske has been known over the years under the moniker of Mythos. He started his career in 1969 as a keyboardist in a symphonic rock group called Mythos as well. He became a performer of different styles of EM. As the years passed he made a name as one of the most versatile musicians in the landscape of EM. In his private studio he produced some fifteen albums. Now, following a break of a few years, Kaske makes a most convincing return with the double CD The Dramatic And Fantastic Stories of Edgar Allen Poe. It's an album dedicated to the works (CD1) and life (CD2) of the famous American writer Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849). Kaske became very intrigued by the literary style of Poe, who, being an orphan, had to endure much hardship during his short life. Not surprisingly these feelings found their expression in Poe's mysterious, gloomy and sometimes frightening stories. For one and a half year Kaske locked himself up in his Berlin studio and conceived these works. The results are highly original melodic pieces of music. The first CD contains eight tracks that vary in length from four to over ten minutes. To depict the drama in Poe's story, Kaske uses numerous distinctive samples of flutes, obscure brass sounds and vocoder-like timbres. In particular the last track called The Island Of The Fay is a real gem with its subtle sequences and atmospheric and melodious lines that remind me of Tangerine Dream in the eighties. The second CD is just as powerful in my opnion with another eight tracks and once again there are many impressive compositional feats. It features a whole set of both recognizable and relatively new sounds. The changes in tempo are nicely done. They occur within the same track The Power Of Words, which in my opinion, add to the surpise factor and thereby maintaining a firm grasp on the listener's attention throughout the piece. Sometimes the music leans towards a classical style like in The Stylus including many string parts. The somewhat Vangelis-like final track E.A.P. Forever provides impressive this melodic and rhythmic album a magnificent ending.
