DARK SIDE OF BRIGHTNESS (NL+E)

Kurt Blackmore was een Amerikaanse amateurmuzikant in het genre van de elektronische muziek (EM). 'Was', want triest genoeg overleed hij enkele jaren geleden op 38-jarige leeftijd aan de complicaties van een erfelijke, recidiverende ziekte van de alvleesklier. Zijn passie was muziek en hoewel hij een geoefend trompettist was en zelfs een graad behaalde aan de Butler University in Indianapolis op het gebied van muziektheorie en compositie, componeerde hij elektronische muziek als hobby. Pas na zijn overlijden besloten zijn weduwe en een goede vriend Dimitri Alano om dit album ter nagedachtenis aan Blackmore uit te brengen. Alano was medecomponist van het nummer Sierra en hielp bij de totstandkoming van Dark Side Of Brightness. De sfeer op het album is soms die van de synthipop die beginjaren tachtig zo populair was, maar daarnaast hoor je ook ook invloeden uit de Keltische mystiek. Kurt Blackmore componeerde het merendeel van zijn muziek als hij zichzelf buiten zijn aardse lichaam waande. Scherend over de fraaiste bergtoppen in vreemde landen werd hij geïnspireerd om muziek te creëren die uitermate toegankelijk en pakkend is. Blackmore gebruikte ritmepatronen, gevarieerde baslijnen - die soms aardig gecompliceerd zijn - en prachtige melodieën bestaande meerdere synthesizerlagen. Als ik Dark Side Of Brightness kort zou moeten omschrijven dan zou ik zeggen: atmosferische tapijtjes en speelse solo’s met een hoogst originele inslag. Het is best moeilijk om invloeden te noemen, maar musici als Yanni in zijn vroege jaren, Patrick O’Hearn en een muzikant als Guido Negrazus maken muziek in hetzelfde genre. Op de achterzijde van de cd staan overigens elf nummers vermeld, maar mijn cd-speler komt tot twaalf.

Kurt Blackmore was an American amateur musician as far as electronic music (EM) is concerned. 'Was', because he sadly passed away some years ago at the age of 38, apparently due to complications of a genetic recurrent disease of his pancreas. His passion was music and although he was a trained musician on the trumpet and achieved a degree in music theory and composition at the Butler University at Indianapolis, as a hobby he composed melodic electronic music. Only after his untimely death his wife and good friend Dimitri Alano decided to put out this album in his memory. Alano co-composed the openingtrack Sierra and helped with the production of Dark Side Of Brightness. Sometimes the atmosphere of synthi-pop, highly popular in the early eighties, can be recognized, but also influences of Celtic mysticism. Blackmore composed most of his music imagining himself outside his earthly body. Soaring over the most beautiful mountain peaks in strange foreign lands, he was inspired to create music that is both highly accessible and catchy. Kurt Blackmore uses rhythm-patterns and varied bass lines that are complicated at times, beautiful melodies with multiple layers of synthesizers. I would describe this CD as atmospheric tapestries and playful soloing with a highly original touch. It’s hard to name influences but Yanni in his early years or Patrick O'Hearn but also musicians like Guido Negrazus create music in the same vein.
