TEMPLES (NL+E)

Ron Berry is een Engelsman die zijn eigen synthesizers, elektronica en apparatuur zelf pleegt te bouwen. In de ruim 73 minuten elektronische muziek (EM) op Temples wordt de luisteraar meegenomen op een heerlijke, zwoele tijdreis waarbij woorden als donker, ambient en landschappen van toepassing zijn. De atmosferische opening met een mooie, rustige melodie wordt afgewisseld door wat ijlere klanken en echoënde soundscapes. Het geheel geeft, overigens welbewust, de muziek een oosterse inslag mede doordat Berry samples van oosterse instrumenten gebruikt. De relaxte atmosfeer en het kalme, warme melodieuze karakter blijft gehandhaafd waarbij Temple Of The Night zelfs herinneringen aan Klaus Schulze uit de jaren zeventig oproept. Er zit iets meer pit in Pilgrim’s Track. De melodieën zijn niet al te ingewikkeld en de overgangen met andersoortige geluiden en effecten zijn vloeiend en klinken erg prettig zonder dat je het gevoel krijgt het allemaal al eens eerder gehoord te hebben. Nog melodieuzer zijn tracks als River Passage, dat soms richting Cusco neigt, en eigenlijk het merendeel van het tweede deel van de cd. Al met al is Temples een bijzonder plezierig schijfje om naar te luisteren.

Ron Berry is an Englishman, who usually designs and builds his own electronics and recording equipment. The album Temples contains over 73 minutes of electronic (EM) which takes the listener on a nice trip through time. Words like dark, ambient and landscapes come to mind. A atmospheric opening with a quiet gentle melody alternates with some distant sounds and echoing scapes. Overall, and on purpose, this album has an Oriental touch to it because of the samples of bells and instruments used by Berry. The very relaxed atmosphere and the calm but warm melodic character remains throughout the first half of the album, bringing back some memories of the music of Klaus Schulze in the seventies in Temple Of The Night. A little more liveliness is encountered on Pilgrim's Track. The melodies are not that complicated and the transitions to some different effects and sounds are flowing and pleasant to hear and, most important: they never give the feeling of I’ve heard it all before. More generally melodic, sometimes even a bit in the vein of Cusco, are tracks like River Passage and, in fact, most of the second part of this album is like this. In conclusion, Temples is a very enjoyable disc to have in your player! Check out his site for his other releases.
