PRECISION MOVEMENTS (NL+E)

Kevin Bate is de man achter Synthetik. Met een bescheiden bijdrage van zijn broer Gill Bate, brengt Kevin op Precision Movements een krap uur muziek die overduidelijk geïnspireerd is op de synthipop uit de jaren tachtig. Zijn eerste synthesizer kocht hij in 1985 en in 2005 vierde hij zijn twintigjarig jubileum als muzikant. De ritmes en melodietjes van bands als Depeche Mode, The Human League, Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), Ultravox en Visage zijn onmiskenbaar te horen in de track Auto East, een vrolijk en dansbaar nummer en datzelfde geldt voor Virtual Faces. Gates grootste ‘instrument’ is een professionele Apple G5 computer en - het zal mijn leeftijd zijn - dat is ook wel te horen. Het is onvoorstelbaar wat iemand met wat kennis en talent met een dergelijk apparaat kan bereiken, want Gate deed vrijwel alles zelf op deze cd. Wat ik toch een beetje mis zijn de warmere klanken van de analoge synths en behalve de breaks, die een drummer van vlees en bloed er ongetwijfeld veel meer in zou hebben gegooid, ook het veel vollere en vettere geluid van echte drums. Invloeden van YMO en Jean-Michel Jarre herkennen we in The Art Of Communication, wederom een vrolijk, opzwepend nummer dat ook wat aan een lichter nummer van Mark Shreeve doet denken tijdens de periode Crash Head. In Ad Infinitum gaat Synthetik ineens de klassieke kant op met geluiden die een orkest met achtergrondkoor benaderen, waardoor er iets van The Buggles en Rick Wakeman in doorklinkt, zeker als er ritme aan wordt toegevoegd. Terug naar de dansvloer met Alles Klar met een knipoog naar Kraftwerk. De melodielijnen zijn weliswaar aansprekend maar niet bijster origineel. Ook Digital World zou het in de discotheek prima doen. Evenzo, zij het qua tempo iets minder snel, is All Time Is Cyclical, met een erg nadrukkelijke discodreun met uitzondering van de korte intermezzi. De titeltrack is naar mijn smaak een ware ode aan Depeche Mode met een aardig, frivool maar niet al te diep basloopje. Een mooi instrumentaal popliedje is Time Piece en het album wordt in feestelijke dansstijl afgesloten met Measured Exposure, waarbij Bates stem voor het eerst nauwelijks vervormd te horen is. Wederom zijn Depeche Mode en Kraftwerk hier goed herkenbaar. Precision Movements is een lichtvoetig plaatje met veel discoinvloeden, met niet te moeilijke bas- en drumpartijen en een aantal erg plezierige melodietjes.

Kevin Bate is the man behind Synthetik. With a modest contribution by - presumably - his brother Gill Bate, Kevin plays on Precision Movements a kind of music obviously inspired by synth-pop from the eighties. He bought his first synth in 1985 and in 2005 he celebrated his 20th anniversary as a musician. Rhythms and melodies from bands such as Depeche Mode, The Human League, Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), Ultravox and Visage are unmistakeably recognizable in the track Auto East, a cheerful danceable tune and the same applies to Virtual Faces. Bate's main ‘instrument’ is a professional Apple G5 computer and I think, you can actually hear this. To me, it’s beyond imagination what someone with knowledge and talent can achieve with a machine like this, because Kevin Bate did almost everything from conceiving to producing all by himself. What I’m missing a bit are the richer sounds produced by the analogue synthesizers and, apart from the numerous breaks a drummer of flesh and blood would have thrown in, also the richer and fuller sounds of real drums. Having said that, we can recognize YMO and Jean-Michel Jarre in The Art Of Communication, again a cheerful uplifting track that could also remind you of the music by Mark Shreeve during the period Crash Head, but surely less bombastic. On Ad Infinitum we move into more classical-oriented music with sounds representing an orchestra and a softly singing choir. Here and there we can find some similarities with The Buggles or even with Rick Wakeman, especially when percussive elements are added. We go back to the dance-floor with Alles Klar, that sounds a bit like Kraftwerk. Though all melodies are quite catchy, they could hardly be called highly original. Digital World would be a perfect track for playing in a discotheque. A similar track, though somewhat slower, is All Time Is Cyclical  with a very obvious disco beat, with the exception of several short interludes. For my taste, the title-track is a real tribute to Depeche Mode and it’s got a nice playful, but not too deep-sounding, bass-loop. Time Piece is a beautiful pop song and the last track of this album is in swinging dance-style and is called Measured Exposure. For the first time we hear Bate’s voice, hardly computerized but almost natural and as before, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk come to mind. Precision Movements is an easy listening, uplifting album with obvious ‘disco’ influences, uncomplicated bass-lines and electronic drums and most certainly a number of very pleasant melodies.
