PHOENIX (NL+E)

Ter gelegenheid van het 25-jarig jubileum van Asia, dé supergroep uit de jaren tachtig, legden John Wetton (bas, zang), Geoff Downes (toetsen, zang), Steve Howe (sologitaar, zang) en Carl Palmer (drums) hun meningsverschillen bij. Zij vierden opnieuw internationale triomfen tijdens hun wereldwijde reünietournee, maar bijna gooiden hartproblemen bij Wetton roet in het eten, want de tournee kon niet worden afgemaakt zoals gepland. Hij is de problemen echter geheel te boven gekomen. Het viertal vond bij het enthousiaste label Frontiers Records onderdak en men dook voor het eerst in 25 jaar weer samen de studio in. Het resultaat is Phoenix, een heerlijk schijfje gestoken in het altijd weer aantrekkelijke en o zo herkenbare artwork met logo van Roger Dean. De nummers klinken kristalhelder en worden uitstekend gezongen door Wetton, die ook zijn alcoholverslaving heeft overwonnen. Phoenix had het derde album na Alpha (1983) moeten zijn, want dan zou het een gigantische klapper zijn geworden, maar dat kan gelukkig nu ook nog! De twaalf tracks zijn samen goed voor bijna 65 minuten luisterplezier. Het album opent met een herkenbaar gitaargeluid à la Heat Of The Moment. Natuurlijk zijn de thema’s en melodielijnen herkenbaar, maar dat is niet verkeerd: een band mag toch een eigen stijl en geluid hebben? Phoenix bevat bijzonder smaakvolle en pakkende melodieën en refreinen, uitstekende arrangementen en een zeer gevarieerd aanbod aan gitaargeluiden. De overgangen van majeur naar mineur zijn niet van de lucht en ook al roepen sommige passages een déjà vu op, de composities zijn goed uitgebalanceerd. Sommigen zullen dit album misschien te voorspelbaar vinden en wellicht zelfs fantasieloos. Uw recensent is echter zeer gevoelig voor mooie, gepolijste AOR en melodieuze rock en naar mijn mening hoor je de kwaliteit van Asia maar zelden. De vier heren hebben hun sporen in de (progressieve) rockmuziek ruimschoots verdiend en Phoenix verenigt het beste van de Wetton-Downes-albums met de inbreng van Howe en Palmer, zoals die zo karakteristiek doorklonk op Asia (1982) en Alpha. Ballads als Heroine en Parallel Worlds zijn juweeltjes en in de tekst van Extraordinary Life is duidelijk wat Wetton heeft doorgemaakt.

Het raffinement van de groten geeft dit album nog dat beetje extra, zodat mij maar één conclusie rest: een voortreffelijk album van een stel topmuzikanten. Naast de 'gewone' versie is er ook een 'limited edition' met videobeelden, interviews en een akoestische livetrack.

Lack of success, personal differences and the fact that all four members of the first line-up of Asia had many other opportunities to keep themselves busy, were reasons why Steve Howe, John Wetton and subsequently Carl Palmer left Asia. Geoff Downes and John Wetton kept in contact and kept on writing music together in Icon. Palmer had his reunion with Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) and after a while he started his own band, while Howe had Yes obviously and also his own band. Downes continued with Asia although the success in the USA was minimal. After 25 years though, all four members of the original line-up were ready to do some celebrating and got back together. The atmosphere turned out to be great, Wetton had managed to gain control of his alcohol problem and the tour was readily fully booked and sold out. In the middle of this tour however, John Wetton got serious heart problems, and a triple bypass surgery saved him and he got back stronger than ever. The tour continued and some shows were recorded and the four prog icons decided to write and record once more. In Frontiers Records, Asia found a trustworthy and enthusiastic label and Phoenix is the result of their efforts. With magnificent artwork by Roger Dean, Phoenix presents twelve new tracks. Most of those were written by Wetton and Downes, two tunes were penned by Howe while Orchard Of Mines was written by Fayman/Pursey, a track adapted by Asia from the album Epicon. All tracks are extremely powerful with catchy hooks and choruses, and well arranged and produced. Wetton does a great job singing and in my opinion. If this would have been the successor to Alpha it would have been a smash hit. Fortunately it’s not too late and many people who were fans from the early Asia music will appreciate this album and treasure it. The over an hour journey starts off with riffs resembling Heat Of The Moment and than the Asia-train keeps on running in the old-fashioned but superb way and rendering magnificent ‘views’ to its passengers. Of course the band has its own distinguished style and sometimes one is inclined to think some themes sound like bits and pieces used before. However, the guitar sound of Yes, the drum sound of ELP and the tastefully arranged keyboards really provide a perfect atmosphere for Wetton’s distinct voice. Ballads like Heroine and Parallel Worlds are gems and in the lyrics of Extraorinary Life you can appreciate what John Wetton went through recently. 

As far as I’m concerned a jewel in melodic rock and certainly this original Asia will reconquer Europe very soon! See the band's website for more news and information about the lyrics.
