MONSTRES ET CHIMÈRES (NL+E)

De Waalse Belg Laurent Calomne is in het dagelijkse leven leraar klarinet, saxofoon en percussie, maar hij componeert ook elektronische muziek (EM) in de stijl van de jaren zeventig. Dat doet hij op Monstres Et Chimères niet onverdienstelijk, want hoewel een deel van zijn muziek absoluut herinneringen oproept aan Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis en Tangerine Dream, is het toch niet eenvoudig om er een eenduidig etiket op te plakken. Calomne componeert aansprekende melodieën, bescheiden ritmes en maakt geen overdadig gebruik van sequencers, maar hij musiceert vooral op basis van een meestentijds niet al te ingewikkeld thema, waarop hij dan soleert. Op zijn album ‘bezingt’ Calomne de bekendste monsters en fantasiewezens uit de mythologie, zoals de eenhoorn, de minotaurus en de fenix. Over de gebruikte technieken, de apparatuur en het instrumentarium blijf ik in het ongewisse, mede doordat ik de op de hoes vermelde website niet kon vinden. Dat de man klassiek geschoold is blijkt niet alleen uit de opbouw van nummers als Petite Suite Chimérique, maar ook uit het eerbetoon aan Beethoven in Elise Et La Licorne. Deze overbekende melodie is gehuld in een soort jazz-meets-sambajasje en valt wat mij betreft iets uit de toon. In zijn arsenaal aan geluiden blijkt overigens wel Calomnes voorliefde voor blaasinstrumenten als klarinet en fluit. Monstres Et Chimères is een gevarieerd album; melodieus en toch ‘anders’.

The daily job of the French-speaking Belgian Laurent Calomne is teaching clarinet, saxophone and percussion, but he also composes electronic music in the style of the seventies; he does that very well. Although parts of his music bring back memories of Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, it's still not easy to put a definite label on his work. Monstres Et Chimères contains strong melodies, restrained rhythms and no excessive use of sequencers. It gives a clear view of a genuine musicality that uses, as a foundation, timeless and uncomplicated themes which are expanded and improvised upon. On this album Calomne creates sound sculptures of the best-known monsters and fantasy creatures from ancient mythology, such as the unicorn, the minotaur and the phoenix. The technical information and instrumentation used remain a mystery to me, mainly because I was unable to find the website mentioned on the sleeve. Apparently he is classically trained from the way in which numbers such as Petite Suite Chimérique are developed and also there is a tribute to Beethoven in Elise Et La Licorne. This well-known melody is placed in a sort of ‘jazz meets samba’ setting and to me it doesn’t seem to fit in comfortably with the rest. Calomne's arsenal of sounds reflects his predilection for woodwind instruments such as the clarinet and flute. Monstres Et Chimères is a varied album, melodious and still ‘different’.
