DRAMANALOG (NL+E)

Halfset is momenteel een band, want het oorspronkelijke Ierse duo bestaande uit Stephen Shannon en Jeff Martin dat het album Dramanalog opnam, is inmiddels aangevuld met drummer Cillian McDonnell, harpist-pianist Sinead Nic Gearalit en trompettist Bill Blackmore. De analoge synths worden ondersteund met drumprogramming en tal van instrumenten als gitaar, banjo, mandoline, glockenspiel, melodica en incidentele zang. De melodieuze elektronische muziek (EM) die daardoor ontstaat bevat invloeden uit de Ierse volksmuziek, jazz, pop- en dansmuziek. De elf nummers zijn prima geproduceerd, zeer sfeervol en hebben nergens irritante geluiden, geschreeuw of overbodig gedreun. Een zeer aardige schijf die mij ook als liefhebber van progressieve rockmuziek aanspreekt al had de trompet wat mij betreft vervangen mogen worden door een lekkere synth. Een nummer als The Abbatoir bijvoorbeeld heeft qua melodie U2-invloeden, terwijl Signals bijna in de categorie ambient valt. Dramanalog is toegankelijk en afwisselend: een aardig album ook al valt het buiten de scope van prog!

Currently, Halfset is a band since the Irish duo consisting of Stephen Shannon and Jeff Martin, has been complemented by drummer Cillian McDonnell, harpist-pianist Sinead Nic Gearalit and trumpet player Bill Blackmore. Drum programming and various instruments, like the guitar, banjo, mandolin, chimes and some incidental vocals, complement the analogue synths on the album Dramanolog. The melodic electronic music (EM) resulting from this combination, is influenced by Irish folk music, jazz, pop and dance. The eleven tracks have been very well produced and offer great atmosphere. They lack annoying sounds, screaming and redundant beats. This very interesting album appeals to my love for progressive rock music as well, although I wouldn’t mind if the trumpet was replaced by a good synth. A song like The Abbatoir melodically reminds me of U2, whereas Signals would almost be an ambient track. This is a good ‘different’ album, which is accessible and diverse!
