YLEM (NL+E)

José Maria Ciria heeft al muzikale ervaring sinds de jaren zeventig. Als drummer en percussionist speelde hij jaren geleden met niemand minder dan Neuronium (Michel Huygen). Zijn achtergrond zorgt voor een eigentijds, vrolijk type elektronische muziek (EM) met veel ritme en met onmiskenbaar Zuid-Europees temperament. De tien stukken op Ylem  werden in de fraaie At Mooss-studio opgenomen met ‘real and virtual synthesizers’, zoals het hoesje vermeldt. De variatie tussen dansbare, swingende werkjes en doorsnee doch mooie melodieuze EM, waarbij af en toe iets van een frivole Jean Michel Jarre doorklinkt, is bijzonder plezierig terwijl de gedetailleerde aandacht die Ciria aan ritme en percussie besteed weliswaar indruk maakt, maar geregeld tegen dance aan schurkt. De elektronische snaredrum is soms zeer nadrukkelijk aanwezig, maar verder zou je Ylem wellicht het Spaanse antwoord op Nova kunnen noemen, zoals die in het nieuwe millennium geklonken zou kunnen hebben.

José Maria Ciria is an experienced musician who has been working since the seventies. As s drummer and percussionist he played with the respected Neuronium (Michel Huygen). This background results in contemporary and cheerful electronic music (EM) with an emphasis on rhythm and an unmistakeable southern European temperament. The ten tracks on Ylem were recorded in the excellent At Mooss Studio with, as is stated on the cover, ‘real and virtual synthesizers’. There is an extremely enjoyable variation between danceable, swinging tunes and average, but pleasant melodic EM, in which you occasionally can hear traces of a jolly Jean Michel Jarre. There is also an impressive amount of attention paid to the details of rhythm and percussion although this regularly gets very close to ‘dance’. The electronic snare drum is sometimes a bit too dominant for me, but for the rest you could see this as a Spanish version of Nova, as they could have sounded if they had continued through to the new millennium.
